Dear all
Most of you will be aware that Wikimedia volunteers, communities and
affiliate organisations around the world have been working on a
movement-wide strategy over the past few years, with final recommendations
and accompanying initiatives published this May. The movement strategy has
now moved into the transition phase, during which there will be three types
of online meetings and events:
-
Preparation events
-
Global events
-
Follow-up events
The aim is that these events will result in an 18 month implementation plan
starting in 2021.
Communities and affiliates are being asked to self-organise preparation
events, to take place in September and October, and provide feedback
according to a template form (which will hopefully be available later this
week). I’m planning to organise a preparation meeting for anyone in the UK
who is interested in the implementation of the movement strategy and would
like to help to shape this; either in terms of identifying overall
priorities, or exploring which aspects of the strategy the UK chapter and
community could help to deliver. This meeting will take place online during
the week beginning 19th October. *Please could you get in touch with me
directly if you would like to attend*, with an indication of your
availability and preferences for a meeting (e.g. if daytime or evenings are
better for you). I will be working on an agenda over the next few weeks and
will confirm the date, time and platform asap.
I realise that the movement strategy has been in development for a long
time and that it has been difficult to sustain engagement with the process.
However it would be really fantastic to bring together different voices in
this discussion, to ensure that the chapter’s response represents a wide
range of community perspectives.
The meta pages with the full list of strategy recommendations and
initiatives is here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>,
and information about preparation events is here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
.
Thanks
Lucy

Hi all
I just wanted to make sure that you are all aware that the draft
Wikimedia *Universal
Code of Conduct* is currently open for community review, here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Draft_review
I attended an affiliates meeting last night and several members of the UCoC
drafting committee were there, and gave an update on the process. It's
clear that much of the feedback so far has come from the English Wikipedia
community, but the code needs to apply across all communities. I would
therefore encourage anyone who edits as part of a
different Wikimedia project or language Wikipedia to think about reviewing
the draft text through this lens and providing some feedback.
It also seems clear from the discussion that a new Universal Code of
Conduct is definitely going to be introduced, so it's a question of what it
will contain rather than whether or not there will be one.
Best wishes
Lucy

Dear all
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has today announced a significant policy
change
<https://www.heritagefund.org.uk/stories/advice-understanding-our-licence-re…>,
with a new requirement for grant recipients to release the digital outputs
of funded projects under a CC-BY 4.0 licence. This includes images,
research, educational materials, project reports, software, web and app
content, databases, 3D models, sound and video recordings.
I know that a number of people on and off this list have been involved in
advocating to NLHF (previously HLF) for this change over a period of years.
I was very pleased to have been part of the licensing review advisory group
that helped to shape the new policy, which has been steered and nurtured to
fruition by Josie Fraser - Head of Digital Policy at NLHF and of
course the former
Chair of Trustees at Wikimedia UK.
All best

Dear all,
I'm currently on a quest to hire a new Wikipedian in Residence for The
British Library, to follow on from the excellent work of Andrew Gray:
https://britishlibrary.recruitment.zellis.com/birl/pages/vacancy.jsf?latest…
Vacancy ref: 03423
Closing date: 8 October 2020
Interview date: 23 October 2020
I'm especially hoping to employ someone who can help the Library to
actively engage with Wikidata, Wikibase and Wikisource.
I've blogged about this opportunity at:

Please do share details widely with anyone who may be interested.

Dear all
Many of you will know Jon Davies from his time as the CEO of Wikimedia UK.
Well he still carries the open knowledge torch wherever he goes, and has
managed to persuade Lambeth Council to release high resolution photos of
its Councillors (including Jon himself!) under a Creative Commons license.
They are currently online here
<https://love.lambeth.gov.uk/lambeth-councillor-images/> - and Jon also has
access to a folder with all the high res files - but he is hoping that a
volunteer will be able to upload these to Wikimedia Commons. Would anyone
be able to help with this? Please let me know if so and I can put you in
direct touch with Jon.
Very best wishes

Thanks Richard and Deryck,
If someone can do it and tell me I can let Lambeth know.
I got soooooo close with them releasing a first tranche of archive but in
the end we could not supply any volunteers to get the project going. I
would like to show we can do this so I can go back to the archives and try
again. They have one of the best in London and I get on well with them
chief archivist for whom I have a lot of respect plus being a councillor I
can encourage the opinion formers.
Could someone/anyone let me know when it is done so I can report back?
Best to all of you.
Thanks

That it's a non-commercial licence is really disappointing, but that's
still a little better than nothing…
https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2020/04/28/british-museum-makes-1-9-millio…
The British Museum has revamped its online collections database, making
over 1.9 million photos of its collection available for free online under a
Creative Commons license.
Under the new agreement the majority of the 1.9 million images are being
made available for anyone to use for free under a Creative Commons 4.0
license <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/>. Users no
longer need to register to use these photographs, and can now download them
directly from the British Museum.
Under the terms of the Creative Commons license, you are free to share and
adapt the images for non-commercial use, but must include a credit to the
British Museum.

I have just finished an article about Charles Rogers, an 18th-century art collector:

If anyone has or can get a photograph relevant to his collection, in the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, that would be a great addition.

Dear all
Wikimedia UK is advertising for the new post of Head of Development and
Communications, with details on our wiki here:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Job_openings
Please do circulate this amongst your networks, as relevant.
For background, we advertised for a new Head of External Relations post
earlier this year but were unable to recruit. We were just about to
re-advertise for a slightly revised post just as the shutdown happened, and
I froze recruitment while we assessed the likely financial impact on the
organisation. Since then, we have secured additional funding from the
Wikimedia Foundation to support the development of our fundraising capacity
over the next few years, and so I have reviewed the priorities for this
role and changed the emphasis to development, with some responsibility for
communications. We are hoping to recruit for a more junior fundraiser later
this year.
Please do feel free to get in touch with any questions, particularly if you
would like to discuss the role.
All best
Lucy
