Dear all
Our excellent Chair of Trustees, Nick Poole, will be stepping down at the
AGM in July after six years as a trustee (which is the maximum term) and
just over a year as Chair. We are therefore recruiting for a new Chair, and
are advertising the role externally as well as promoting the opportunity
amongst our existing trustees, committee members, volunteers and wider
networks.
*Please do consider whether this might be the right opportunity for you*.
If so, do feel free to contact our Communications and Governance
Co-ordinator Katie on katie.crampton(a)wikimedia.org.uk to arrange an
informal conversation about the role. If not, we would be very grateful if
you could help us to promote the role by circulating it amongst your own
networks. Katie will be promoting the opportunity on social media so if you
follow us there, please do share/retweet etc.
The ideal candidate might come from a wide range of professional
backgrounds but will have a good understanding of charity governance, the
skills and experience to run productive meetings, and a collegiate,
collaborative approach in keeping with the ethos of the Wikimedia movement.
They will also bring a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
and understand how important this is to an organisation like Wikimedia UK.
It goes without saying that they will need to be passionate about open
knowledge and understand the importance and value of Wikipedia and the
other Wikimedia projects.
To see the role description and/or download the recruitment pack, please go
here:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Chair_of_the_Board_of_Trustees
The deadline is Sunday 6th June and interviews are likely to be on 14th
June.
Thanks and best wishes
Lucy

Hi all
We're in need of a volunteer to help us add captions and alt text to the
images on our website, likely through doing reverse google searches to
identify the images. Let me know if anyone's able to give us a hand.

to applicants, support successful movement activities and make funding
decisions for grant applications in the region. Committees will be
established for the following regions:
- Middle East and Africa
- SAARC region (Includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the
Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka)
- East, Southeast Asia, and Pacific (ESEAP) region
- Latin America (LATAM) and The Caribbean
- United States and Canada
- Northern and Western Europe
- Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)
All details about the Committees and how to apply can be found on meta here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Resources/Grants_Strategy_Relaunc…>.
The deadline is 4th June. If you have questions or comments, the grants
team at the Foundation asks that you add them to the discussion page for
the relaunch (link above).
Best wishes

Dear colleagues,
There is still time to book a place to join us Monday lunchtime 12-1pm for a celebration of Wikipedia #KnowledgeActivism in Scotland!
This event for the University of Edinburgh’s Digital Skills Festival discusses the efforts of the ScotWiki community and the Wikimedia residency at the University of Edinburgh<https://www.ed.ac.uk/information-services/help-consultancy/is-skills/wikime…>; highlighting its efforts working with Wikipedia both as an ally in its mission to disseminate verifiable open knowledge and an important tool in its information literacy and digital skills strategy.
Volunteer editors (staff, students and members of the public) over the last 5 years have helped address content online that was missing, skewed or less than fulsome. Particularly where Scotland had a rich story to tell.
Line-up of speakers
* 5 years of Wikipedia in teaching & learning at the University of Edinburgh: condensing course programmes and projects the Wikimedia residency has been involved in supporting inc. Witches; Suffragettes; The Edinburgh Seve; Global health; Islamic Art; Scotland, Slavery and Black History and more - Ewan McAndrew (Wikimedian in Residence)
* Wikipedia and the gender gap - Sarah Lappin, President of the University of Edinburgh Women in STEM society, will outline her motivations and the outcomes of the editing events she organised this year.
* Representing the History of HIV and AIDS activism on Wikipedia - Lorna Campbell, OER Service at University of Edinburgh, discuss the collaboration with HIV Scotland to improve Wikipedia pages related to the history of HIV awareness and activism in Scotland.
* Wikimedia in Scotland projects, and Scots Wikipedia - Dr. Sara Thomas, Scotland Programme Co-ordinator at Wikimedia UK, will outline the brilliant projects taking place throughout Scotland to address knowledge gaps online and the work being done by a group of volunteers to improve Scots Wikipedia.
* Making Wikipedia easier to learn and engage with, a student perspective - Hannah Rothmann, Classics undergraduate, will outline how and why she spent lockdown creating easy-to-follow 'how to edit' videos so that anyone at any university can contribute to Wikipedia.
* Wikimedia UK and the road ahead - Lucy Crompton-Reid, CEO at Wikimedia UK, will outline some of the work being supported by the charity and the road ahead for work in the UK as we navigate our way through the post-pandemic world.
This is a free event, open to all.
Full details of the event can be found on Eventbrite<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/digital-skills-festival-wikimedia-in-scotlan…>, where you can book a place and receive the Zoom webinar invite. Dear all
Wikimedia UK's 2021 AGM and community day will be taking place on Saturday
10th July. After some consideration, we have decided that this year's event
will again be held online.
We are starting to plan the day and would very much welcome your input into
this. Previous days have included some or all of the following:
-
Keynote talks from people working within open knowledge, or related
fields
-
Breakout groups to discuss/workshop specific ideas or issues
-
Skills development training (for example, Wikidata workshops)
-
Editing sessions
-
Lightning talks
-
Briefing/consultation on issues relating to Wikimedia UK or the wider
global movement
-
Wikimedia UK Annual Awards
-
Informal socialising/networking
We would love for volunteers and members to help shape the day. Please do
email our Communications and Governance Co-ordinator
katie.crampton(a)wikimedia.org.uk if you have ideas for the day and/or would
like to contribute to the programme yourself.
What we have to cover during the AGM itself is more circumscribed, and
includes reports from key people (Chair, Treasurer and CEO), and questions
on the Reports; as well as voting on resolutions and the board
elections. Please bear in mind that any member of the charity is welcome to
propose a resolution for the AGM. Katie or I will send details about how to
do this a little nearer the time.
This year we will have three vacancies for elected trustees, with two board
members having to retire in accordance with our articles, and one who has
come to the end of their current elected term but has indicated that they
will stand again. I would like to strongly encourage community members to
consider standing for election this year.
Alongside community experience, we would be keen for people to stand with
any of the following skills or experience:
External relations
Charity or copyright law
Charity governance
Working with or in the cultural sector
However this is not essential. What is more important is a commitment to
open knowledge and the work of Wikimedia UK, and a willingness to take on
the responsibility of being a charity trustee and board director of a
limited company. There is more information about what this means here
<https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-essential-trustee-what-you-n…>
.
*We strongly value diversity in Wikimedia UK's board of trustees and this
year, would particularly encourage younger people (aged under 40) to
stand. *
If you would like an informal conversation with me or one of the trustees
about what being on the board involves, and potentially standing for
election, please do send me an email (to the address above) and I will set
up a call. We will send out details of the formal process for standing for
election nearer the time.
Finally, please do consider becoming a member
<https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=4>
of Wikimedia UK if you are not already. Whilst we value community attendees
for the day, only members are entitled to vote. Membership costs just £5 a
year, although we welcome additional donations.
With best wishes
Lucy

Dear all
As many of you will be aware, the Wikimedia Foundation board of trustees
recently ratified the text of the new Universal Code of Conduct and are now
consulting on the enforcement of the Code. The Trust and Safety team has
asked me to circulate a survey regarding enforcement pathways, via the
message below.
As some of the questions relate to your affiliate's policies and bylaws, I
thought it might be helpful to share a link to our Safe Space Policy:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Safe_Space_Policy
Please note that when the survey refers to 'members' it does not mean
members of the charity, but volunteers who are involved in events and other
Wikimedia UK programme activities.
Any questions, please let me know. I know the team would be keen to hear
responses as soon as possible but certainly *by the end of March. *
Best wishes
Lucy
