Subject: [MoveCom] New online learning courses on Building Partnerships and
Identifying and Addressing Harassment
To: <movecom(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
The Community Development
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development> team at the
Wikimedia Foundation is launching the WikiLearn (Online Learning Pilot)
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn>, a
capacity-building project. This project will deliver two courses over an
8-week period that will begin on February 1, 2021. Courses are free to take
part in and will be hosted on Moodle <https://moodle.com/>. During this
pilot project, each course will be taught, and assignments are to be
prepared, in English. At the end of the pilot, we will be making course
materials available for anyone interested in self-study, and for
translation.
The two courses we will be launching on February 1, 2021, are:
1.
Identifying and Addressing Harassment
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn/Identifying…>:
This course will focus on developing skills that will help volunteers
respond to on- and off-wiki harassment.
-
This course will combine scheduled sessions and independent study.
The weekly commitment of this course is 2-3 hours per week.
-
Target Audience: Volunteers with administrator or other advanced user
rights.
1.
Partnership Building:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn/Partnership…>
This
intensive course will provide an in-depth curriculum on how to develop
meaningful programmatic and organizational partnerships within the movement
and with external partners.
-
This course will consist of scheduled sessions and individual
assignments with a weekly total commitment of up to 6 hours.
-
Target Audience: Volunteers with intermediate-level experience
contributing to Wikimedia projects and beginner-level experience with
building partners with Non-Wikimedia groups and organizations.
To ensure our small team can provide each learner individual support, we
are limiting each course in this pilot to 40 participants. We ask that all
interested applicants commit to attending weekly for the full course.
All efforts will be made to ensure that scheduled sessions are time-zone
friendly to the greatest number of enrolled participants. However, with the
wide distribution of volunteers, that may not always be possible.
Key Dates:
-
Applications open Today (December 15, 2020) and will close on January 1,
2021.
-
Successful applicants will be notified on January 18, 2021.
-
The first session for each course will be held on February 1, 2021.

Hi folks
Just forwarding on an event that may be of interest to anyone looking at
issues of news literacy and open knowledge. They're trying to increase
geographic diversity (...sadly it'll be 4am in Sydney so no good for me).

Hi all,
Just to remind people that we're still holding a virtual "London" wiki
meetup on the second Sunday of every month. Of course being virtual means
that geography is no constraint, so do join us from wherever you are. This
is a purely social affair: come along to chat about what you've been doing
on Wikipedia/Wikimedia, or indeed any topic you like. We've got quite a few
regular attendees, but new faces are always very welcome.
The next regular meetup will be on Sunday 13 December:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/London/162
Additionally to help cope with Lockdown 2 we're holding an extra meetup
tomorrow afternoon (Sunday 22 November). Short notice I know, but maybe
some of you can join regardless:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/London/161
Hope to see some of you there!

Hi all
This is just a reminder that the prioritisation event for the English
Wikipedia community is taking place today, over zoom. The agenda and zoom
link is on the event page here:

I hope to see some of you there!

Dear Wikimedia UK mailing list
I am hosting a zoom call next Tuesday 17th November, 5 - 7pm for en.wiki
editors to have their say about what gets prioritised and resourced next
year. The discussion will be from a global movement (rather than individual
chapter) perspective, as we have been asked to facilitate something for the
whole English Wikipedia community; but I would really like to hear from
UK-based contributors about your needs and priorities.
You can sign up here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6h49tEmEMGBwa4EIcPGmw6j3aGNeXWh2…>
to register your interest (you only need to give your email address,
although answering the other questions would be helpful) and I will send
out the zoom link on Monday 16th.
You can see the more formal invitation below, which I will be sending to
the wider community mailing list later today.
Please note that we are also organising discussions focused on the 'Celtic
Knot', but not a specific Wikimedia UK only conversation.
All best
Lucy
Join Wikimedia UK and Katherine Maher for a community discussion on our
priorities for 2021
Tuesday 17th November from 5 to 7pm UTC
In 2017 the Wikimedia Foundation facilitated the creation of a strategic
direction
<http://kiskeacity.bmetrack.com/c/l?u=B2712F1&e=113E0B7&c=77108&t=0&l=1320A9…>
to guide the global Wikimedia movement into the future. The goal is that by
2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem
of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join.
Over the past three years, people from across the global Wikimedia movement
have come together to discuss how we can work toward this. The result is a
set of underlying principles and ten recommendations, each with
accompanying initiatives and actions.
We are now in a transitional stage between the creation of the strategy and
its implementation. This is a crucial moment to explore how the English
language community can contribute to the implementation of the strategy,
and have a say in how the recommendations are prioritised.
Inspired by the Movement Strategy's 10-year vision, Wikimedia UK would like
to hear from volunteers based anywhere in the world who contribute to
English Wikipedia about where the movement should focus its efforts in
2021.
The meeting will be held over Zoom on Tuesday 17th November from 5 to 7pm
UTC. We will be joined by a number of Wikimedia Foundation staff members
including:
Katherine Maher, Executive Director/CEO
Ryan Merkley, Chief of Staff
Mehrdad Pourzaki, Community Relations and Communications, Movement Strategy
Kaarel Vaidla, Lead Movement Process Architect
Please sign up to the event through this Google Form
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6h49tEmEMGBwa4EIcPGmw6j3aGNeXWh2…>.
The zoom link will be sent out in advance of the call. In the meantime you can
find out more about the movement strategy and the ten recommendations here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Recomme…>
.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the meeting!
With best wishes
Lucy

Hi all
We're recruiting for a Fundraiser and Development Coordinator
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Fundraising_Development_Coordinator> to join
our newly formed Development and Communications team, which includes
Natasha Iles and myself.
The Foundation has recently awarded us an additional grant to develop our
fundraising capacity over the next three years. We are therefore looking
for a competent, ambitious and creative fundraiser to fill this
newly created role with responsibility for building and managing the
voluntary income for the charity.
If you could please share among your networks we'd be very grateful, as
we're not using recruiters to fill this role. We've tweeted
<https://twitter.com/wikimediauk/status/1323308170811461637?s=20>, Facebook
posted <https://www.facebook.com/WikimediaUK/posts/3729778447034287>, and
shared on LinkedIn
<https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6729074450349731840>,
if you could help us out there too.
Many thanks

The British Stammering Association has started running some adverts
that can be seen here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:STAMMA_Find_The_Right_Words_advert_…
They include the text at:
"The way we talk about stammering is wrong so we worked with wikipedia
to make it right"
The edits were made by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Stamma_BSA_1
and are fairly harmles.
Might be an idea for wikimedia UK to reach out to try and help things
stay harmless (and who knows we might actualy find something to work
together on).

Dear all
I'm very pleased to introduce you all to Natasha Iles, who joined Wikimedia
UK on Monday as our new Head of Development and Communications. Natasha
will be heading up a new team, including Katie Crampton - who has been
promoted to Communications and Governance Co-ordinator - and a new
Fundraising Co-ordinator who we will be recruiting later this year. The
creation of this new team has been made possible, in part, by a grant from
the Wikimedia Foundation to help us to develop our fundraising capacity
over the next three years.
I will let Natasha tell you more about herself, and hopefully there will be
opportunities to meet her over the next few months, albeit probably online
at this stage.
Best wishes
Lucy
