We need a volunteer (or two) to help with editing video recordings of the
EduWiki 2013 presentations.
For some reason, the video and audio for EduWiki presentations were
recorded on separate tracks, so we need someone to help us sync these up
and prepare them for uploading.
Please contact me (toni.sant(a)wikimedia.org.uk) and/or Stevie Benton (
stevie.benton(a)wikimedia.org.uk) about this if you're willing to give us a
hand. Raw files can be made available to the volunteer/s, so you don't need
to be able to work on the files at WMUK's London office.
Many thanks,
Toni

Wikimedia UK is a Company Limited by Guarantee registered in England and
Wales, Registered No. 6741827. Registered Charity No.1144513. Registered
Office 4th Floor, Development House, 56-64 Leonard Street, London EC2A 4LT.
United Kingdom. Wikimedia UK is the UK chapter of a global Wikimedia
movement. The Wikimedia projects are run by the Wikimedia Foundation (who
operate Wikipedia, amongst other projects).
*Wikimedia UK is an independent non-profit charity with no legal control
over Wikipedia nor responsibility for its contents.*
In the light of the recent announcement by the Wikimedia Foundation that
paid editing is not acceptable for employees, and the apparent swift
termination of a long term employee, I believe it appropriate for the Board
of Trustees of Wikimedia UK to agree a policy at the next board meeting to
require employees, contractors and trustees to publicly declare any current
or past paid editing activities, or related unpaid advocacy that may
represent a potential conflict of interest.
The risk to the charity by allowing confidential declarations limited to
the board in this area, or to "overlook" past paid editing (even if some
years ago) is that a current board member, employee or contractor may be
perceived to be deliberately misleading the Wikimedia community. Were this
to be exposed then Wikimedia UK may suffer reputational damage if seen to
be supporting procedures that protect this secrecy.
Considering the recent resignation of an Arbcom member, after avoiding a
public declaration of off-wiki accounts where they were advocating matters
related to Wikimedia projects, I would hope that the board would require
employees and contractors to similarly interpret "related advocacy" as
applying to "secret" accounts elsewhere whenever they can be seen to relate
to Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia UK matters. The board of trustees will
already be aware that such undeclared accounts already exist.
I have posted this same proposal at <
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Engine_room#Declarations_for_paid_editing_and…>,
however I recommend that should anyone wish to discuss specific examples,
including naming
or linking to
the WMF employee case, that this is limited to this independent email list
rather than using the WMUK wiki.
Thanks

Hello everyone,
As you may know, the European Commission is currently conducting a
consultation on copyright. They have posted a series of questions and are
seeking answers from groups that have an interest, such as Wikimedia
chapters.
European Wikimedia chapters recently signed a statement of
intent<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Free_Knowledge_Advocacy_Group_EU_statement_of…>
to
work collectively in tis area under an umbrella known as the Free Knowledge
Advocacy Group EU. This is a really good opportunity for Wikimedians to
have a say on this important area.
A page has been started on Meta where Wikimedians can take a look at the
EC's questions and respond collaboratively. The page can be seen at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/European_Commission_copyright_consultation and
there is a tentative deadline of 27 January for the discussion to finish.
Please do get involved!
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

For anyone near, or visiting, Edinburgh.
It seems the first couple of months are going to be "a bit woolly" in
the National Museum, just don't give the Roslin Institute any mammoth
DNA!

Hey all.
If you haven't seen it already, UK Wikimedians, and the chapter, will
probably be interested in [1], a proposal to film, photograph, and
talk to MEPs.
Having only had a brief glance over the email, it seems like a very
credible opportunity that Wikimedia UK will want to support in spirit,
if not in more concrete terms. I post an extract below.
I apologise if someone has already posted this, but I can't recall anything.
Best,
Harry

"After contacting the European
Parliament I was able to get their approval, the support by the parties and
a date [to meet, photograph and film with MEPs in February].
... [The 2014 European]
elections are a great
opportunity to raise awareness on our material we have in Wikipedia and on
Commons. It is also an excellent opportunity to bring together volunteers
in doing our core work together, maybe we can transfer the idea of
Parliament Projects to other countries. Volunteers get the opportunity to
learn from each other - the EP is a very challenging project, having more
than 700 MEPs to be handled within a few days."
http://qrpedia.org/stats.php seems broken right now, could someone take a look?
Cheers,
Erik
