Changes to the Wikimedia UK homepage

Hello everyone, You may notice that we've made some experimental small changes to the top of the Wikimedia UK homepage. There's a good possibility that we will be experiencing an increase in traffic over the weekend so the new text and layout is prepared specifically with newcomers to the wiki in mind. Please do let me know if you have any feedback but please do not edit the page. OpenSym 2014 (formerly known as WikiSym)

WikiSym has changed it's named to OpenSym and this year it will take place on 27th – 29th August in Berlin. It's an annual symposium about open collaboration. Apologies for the late notice: the National Library of Scotland and the Scottish Poetry Library are hosting an Anybody BUT Burns edit-a-thon this Saturday from noon at the NLS (George IV Bridge, Edinburgh). Burns' night is rapidly approaching and folk around the globe will be celebrating the Bard in style and good cheer, but we think that we should take a moment to think about the thousands of Scottish poets who won't be toasted this weekend! Local writers and literary enthusiasts alike are encouraged to join us and help boost the online profile of the poet who inspires them most. If you are a poet yourself, bring along some work and liven up the afternoon with a reading. Chiltern Trains Wi-Fi blocks Wikimedia Commons

For some time, Chiltern Trains free Wi-Fi has been blocking Wikimedia Commons, as: This site was categorized in: Photo Sharing, File Storage, Software/Technology, Research/ Reference, Non-Profits, Visual Search Engines Wikipedia, including its commons-hosted images, is not blocked. I have reached out to them more than once on Twitter to ask for an unblock, or who to speak to about requesting one, but they have never replied. Apart from e-mailing them ,which I shall do shortly, what other action might we take, as a community? Hello everyone, As you may know, Wikimedia UK has been working with other organisations such as Creative Commons, Mozilla and Open Knowledge Foundation to build closer working relationships and collaborations between organisations working in the open space. We're currently calling this the "open coalition". The work has progressed to the point where we are looking to recruit someone for a six month project to develop this more fully.
