Hi , In case you haven't seen this : Wikimedia Traffic Analysis Reports
*Wikipedia Page Views Per Country* - Overview http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportPageViewsPerCountryOv...
Only 1.9 % of traffic for Wikimedia Projects is from India. ( 13th position)
*Page Views Per Wikipedia Language* http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportPageViewsPerLanguageB...
From India :
English (en) - 3.7 % Simple English (simple) - 5.9 % Hindi (hi) - 86.5 % Tamil (ta) - 60.5 % Malayalam (ml) - 66.3 % Telugu (te) - 79.5 % Bengali (bn) - 17 % Urdu (ur) -6.1 Kannada (kn) - 79.3 % Gujarati (gu) - 76.1 % Nepali (ne) -15.3 % Kapampangan (pam) 7.6 % Marathi (mr) 88.1 Sanskrit (sa) - 55.9 % Fiji Hindi (hif) - 23 % Punjabi (pa) -47 % Assamese (as) -25.9 Oriya (or) - 53.5% Bihari (bh) - 26.9 % Setswana (tn) - 8.2 % Pali (pi) - 5.2 % Nepal Bhasa (new) -21.6 %
This also gives some idea of where the traffic to Indic language Wikipedias are coming from.
Stats of some of Indic languages like Bhojpuri, Bishnupriya Manipuri , Kashmiri ,Sindhi are missing though.
*Page Edits Per Wikipedia Languages* http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportPageEditsPerLanguageB...
From India :
English (en) -3.5 % Tamil (ta) - 51.3 % Persian (fa) -0.9 % Simple English (simple) 2.7 %
Wishes if it included more of Indian languages.
And the *India Report Card* http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN_India/ReportCardIndia.htm
Regards Tinu Cherian
Only 3.7% visiting EN? Makes my edits relating to India feel insignificant and pointless now. :-(
3.7% in of all English views from India - remember, most major countries have loads of English speakers so this is bound to be spread out. Indic is much higher as India is the base for these languages.
The percentage statistics are a bit misleading, if you see actual figures in terms of number of views, it will tell you a different story.

Bala, WDD, I didn't understand how. Do you mean to say that Indic languages cater primarily to India related articles also, while English caters to non Indian content too? The figures might be misleading but they support my earlier theory that wrt English, Indian students still prefer textbooks over Wiki ...
Hopefully not starting a flame war here but...

If I had a rupee for every time I saw a 'paper' or 'presentation' from a student who had 'forgotten' to remove the [citation needed] and numbered inline references when they copy pasted from Wikipedia, WMF wouldn't be running a fund raiser :)
As a very small part-time faculty in Pune University for M Sc Defence Studies students, I can tell you that virtually any and every assgnment has nothing worthwhile to find in the course textbooks but lots in Wikipedia.
My two bits.

Ashwin, I agree, but I was talking something similar to how Wiktionary is used in Tamil. Engineering students use it a lot for everyday studies. Bala and Surya can throw light on the matter. Anyway, it proves that we have a long way to go in achieving Jimmy Wales' goal of everybody having access to the sum of all knowledge but we're getting there.
Yuvi, I agree with you. Back in 2005, when I joined Wikipedia, I remember a teacher failing a classmate for submitting a physics project with Citation Needed written all over it. I was smart enough to rewrite it. I meant, use of Wikipedia for reference in everyday study. Like for example, I studied Introduction to COBOL from the Wikipedia article. Similarily, I studied my tenth standard history from Wikipedia. The textbook is my natural enemy.

Glad to see part of the stats that I have been waiting for quite some time. The # of unique visitors from India is the other part that I hope will be included soon.
Interesting to see that Marathi tops followed by Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. I found a good % for Kannada coming from China equal to US, which seems a bit unusal. Probably the general distribution for languages, also reflects the distribution of the Indian language speaking diaspora across the world.

I was just analysing some data on various languages, and find some sudden increase of various numbers on 8 March 2011 and 12 Dec 2011. Pl. find attached the ppt graphs for ready refernce. Can somebody help to understand what was so special on those 2 days.... How we can see such an increase like 60121 new users on English WP in single day....

Thanks for the link Tinu. Also, Surya, from what I've seen Tamil has a closely knit community that has strict standards and monitors each article. Hence article quality is never compromised thus resulting in returning visitors.
