The link at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Food states "...we will be handing out bigger prizes to entice people to participate and donate their photos to Commons. " Are prizes being handed out as an incentive to increase contribution and participation or, as an enticement?
Really, token prices can be understood, but in thousands of Rs? The money can be spent on better things imho.

Hi,
I'm kinda confused; that the main contest starts from the next day the planned pilot contest ends. So whats the use of running a pilot contest without spending time in understanding what went good and what went bad.
Is it because the chapter is in deadline to do something as a big project within next quarter or is there any other reason?

Hi Karthik
The planning of the competition in Phase 2 constantly will evolve as the pilot project proceeds. Phase 1 will be a constant learning for all the volunteers as it proceeds. I don't see any harm when the main contest starts as the pilot ends.

Hi Ashwin
There was an IRC on the 12th April which was informed about 6 days in advance on WLF discussion page. In this IRC, the prizes were discussed. Also when compared to other "Wiki Loves" competitions which were also organized all over the world, they also had similar Prizes.
Best example is Wiki Loves Africa which included Prizes like Smartphone-Galaxy note 4, US$200 Amazon gift etc.
Obviously our competition is not on a grand scale as Wiki Loves Africa, but we are trying to create an environment which facilitates maximum participation within all walks of the Wikimedia community.

I also concur that the prize money should be token for a pilot with 50 participants.
Also I have also suggested on the wiki that this is not related to language but states.
Please do take into account wider feedback from this email trail into account.
Good luck for the pilot.

Hi Dhaval,
We apologize for not responding on your query on commons. If you see the history on the discussion page, each and every question has been answered by some or the other volunteer for WLF. I don't know how we missed it.
Regarding your question about why Wikimedia India is concerned, I suggest you to check the word 'India' in Wikimedia India. As a chapter of India, WMIN has a focus to involve each and every language community.
I don't see any harm if the organizers of the event calls one of the volunteers. Also, you should understand that this is a community led event & we would want the volunteers to initiate discussions in their respective language groups.
Thanks, Sanket Oswal

Hello WMIN & WLF team,
I suggest you to involve people from other communities who have organized such events earlier.
I can help you with few names.
Ravishankar from Tamil Community
Naveen Francis and Kartik Nadar from Wiki Loves Monument.
Shantanu Chandra from Bengali Community.
Biswarup Ganguly who has 25000 plus edits on Commons.
*I also suggest everyone to not entertain people like Srikanth on this list. *
Srikanth has no interest in Wikimedia India Chapter and that's why he resigned from the EC.
He left the chapter in crisis. I still remember the thread "WMIN EC in Minority" which Srikanth started on the mailing list. (You can check the archives and you'll get to know what I'm talking about)
He along with his 2 friends (also Ex EC members) strategically stepped down from the EC on the face of the previous elections and wanted to dissolve the WMIN Chapter. Thanks to people like Viswa, Sudhanwa, Jayanta, Ekbal & Nikita who saved the chapter at that time.
Good luck for the event.
Best Wishes, Jayantilal

Hi Jayantilal,
Your suggestions are valid but not your accusations.
Please note that every board member who have served the board will deserve a great salute from me for spending their volunteer time and so Srikanth does. I'm sure the current EC will also agree though its been just 4-5 months. It's not a easy task. Also note that Srikanth has given some splendid contributions to the movement. He is that person who will just walk for whole day on road to upload toll and images on buses to Commons.
Everyone has right to quit as well for their own reasons with the approval of the board. I think as now we have a new board, its time to support them and the movement in India. On 18-Apr-2015 4:56 pm, "Jayantilal Kothari" jayantilalkkd@gmail.com wrote:

Hi Sankarshan
You should understand that WMIN has not done any event like this on such a large scale. There was a trust deficit between the community & WMIN. The new EC is trying to bridge this gap. So you can interpret it "as an incentive to increase contribution and participation or , as an enticement." The main aim of the new EC is to restore WMIN to its glory days & spearhead the movement in India.

Hi srikanth
Regarding your doubt about having high value prizes for Phase 1, this was discussed about in IRC.
- The main reason why we are having prizes in phase 1, so that people are attracted to participate in Phase 1. If we have prizes in Phase 2 & not phase 1, we might not get the required participants (ie 50) to participate. Also ppl will feel that they should participate in Phase 2, since there are prizes & will not be encouraged to participate in Phase 1.If we have too low prizes (as compared to phase 2), then also we might not get the required participants.
So to attract particpants to phase 1, so we kept prizes of phase 1,well within the range of phase 2 I suggest you to go through the link again!!
Where is it written that Phase 1 is a invite only phase?? Just for your information, i will quote the text from WLF page
*This will be a pilot to understand the dynamics of Commons community before the contest is launched for the wider Wikimedia India community. Around 50 participants will be enrolled for this in a first come first register basis. We will also invite 2 nominations per language community https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Food/Community_Nominations besides these 50 participants.* I don't see it written anywhere that is it a Invite only??

Hi Yohann,
What I understand from everybody's query is that how will be participants be enrolled? If you can explain, I think that answer's a big question for the pilot project.

Hi srikanth
Regarding your doubt about having high value prizes for Phase 1, this was discussed about in IRC.
- The main reason why we are having prizes in phase 1, so that people
are attracted to participate in Phase 1.

Thanks Karthik,
I asked similar question a few days ago on commons, but haven't received any reply there yet. Organisers can see it @
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Food/Planning#Enr...
I and some of my community members learned from another community member who is volunteering for this event that he was approached by phone from someone from wikimedia and was asked to get community nomination. This sounds weird to me, why "wikimedia" is concerned? Why is there a push for community participation? If you care so much why not answer the questions raised by people on commons? Why to contact someone offwiki? Why can "Wikimedia" not engage themselves on local community discussion page/village pumps?
Hope to get answers to some of these here and for the ones i raised on commons, there.

Instead of repeatedly pointing to Wiki Loves Africa blindly for every single question, perhaps it would be wise to also look at something closer: https://ta.wikipedia.org/s/y2z
The Tamil Wiki Media Contest, that was conducted in 2011-2012. It ran for a period of three months, and generated over 8000 files. Please have a look at the prizes as well.

Dear Yohann,
After going through the links and the logs etc, I am having serious doubts about this whole project.
This is what I feel:
1. Is this really a competition? Or just a photo upload event? How come there are community nominations for a competition? Moreover, how language is related to pictures? Do you mean a Marathi person can not take/upload pictures of Rasgulla or Chole-Bhature or fafda or idly?
2. The time frame of just 15 days for the first phase is too small. And comparatively, the prizes are BIG. What is the logic behind this? How many pictures are expected? Are those prizes have any co-relation to the number of pictures?
3. Phase two has even BIGGER prizes !! Again, what is the logic ?
From the IRC log, I have a feeling that just to finish off the
available money, these prizes are declared. I do not think this is a good idea and a nice way of spending money.
4. What is the eligibility of the pictures? What is the minimum picture size? Any photo taken from a half megapixel mobile camera is acceptable? How you will compare it with a HD quality picture taken on a full frame digital camera or even a high end medium format camera?
5. What is the eligibility of the pictures? WLF page tells about what is not eligible and not the other way. It seems that all images should be having commons license. But then the judging is considering the license of the picture also..
6. Criteria fo judging is also difficult. You can not judge picture on "originality". Technical quality can be a good criteria but it needs some common base which is not defined in the rules. (see point 4 above)
7. With due respect to all the judges and their knowledge, let people understand how the judges are selected/decided and what are their credentials. This will help people to upgrade their skills so that they can volunteer as a judge in any further contests.
8. The fine print is really amazing !!! *** ".... and the organizers reserve the right to modify these rules or to cancel the contest at their sole discretion, even after it has started."*** WOW !! The rules can be changed at any time !! What kind of contest is this?
Overall, even though WLF is a great idea, I feel that this whole project is not properly planned and executed. I think WMIN should reconsider the whole project again.
//completely non-relevent info
btw, apart from whatever little bit of contribution to WMIN activities I have made, I have been a photographer myself and participated in photo exhibitions, written articles in photography magazines, got my pictures printed in magazines and worked for a photographic society. Whatever knowledge/wisdom collected from my photographic activities is the background for writing all these points. Hope you don't mind.
