Hi,
Based on community feedback, phase 1 (pilot) of Wiki Loves Food contest is extended till May 7, 2015.
There are few slots and community nominations available still .
You can register at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Food#Phase_1:_April_15...
Phase 2 will start from May 15, 2015.
Please help us spread this update and encourage food photographers and bloggers you know to participate.
Thanks,
Ravi
Hi,
Looks like extending the date has not much impact on the number and quality of pictures.
There are about 440 pictures uploaded and many of them are just fruit, vegetable pictures. Could not understand what is "aesthetic" in those pictures.
Considering the quantity as well as quality of pictures, my opinion is not to go ahead with the contest further. Also, all of them are not worth those thousands of rupees prize money.
I am curious to know the statistics of images posted by general public and nominated people.
Regards -Sudhanwa

Hi Sudhanwa,
Phase 1 of contest is a pilot conducted to understand the dynamics of Commons community. It has helped us refine various aspects in Phase 2.
I agree that there are certain things that could have been done better in the pilot phase. But, as far as we know, this is the first time any one has conducted a pilot for a photo contest. So, we do have lot of learnings from conducting this pilot which will be documented in our upcoming progress report.
Phase 2 progress can be tracked at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaign:wlf
In the last few days, we are getting around 500+ images uploaded every day and most of them represent the diverse cuisine of Indian sub-continent.
1560 contestants have registered so far.
Commons:Wiki_Loves_Food http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Food has been viewed 128309 times in the last 30 days and we are trying various channels to reach more people.
Based on GLAMorous tool https://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorous.php?doit=1&category=Wiki+Loves+Food&use_globalusage=1&ns0=1&projects[wikipedia]=1&projects[wikimedia]=1&projects[wikisource]=1&projects[wikibooks]=1&projects[wikiquote]=1&projects[wiktionary]=1&projects[wikinews]=1&projects[wikivoyage]=1&projects[wikispecies]=1&projects[mediawiki]=1&projects[wikidata]=1&projects[wikiversity]=1, 24.96% of uploaded images in Phase 1 are already being used in various Wikimedia projects.
We request more volunteers to sign up at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Food/Volunteers
to help us organize the images uploaded in Phase 2.
We will provide more stats once the contest is over.
Thanks,
Ravi
Looks like the pictures in this phase a slightly better. I am still not convinced about the whole contest process and the prizes.
Just have a look at the food pictures here: http://finedinelove.com/art-of-food-loving-food-through-photographs/?utm_sou...
A single good food picture takes about at least 3-4 hours in a professional studio. Of course I am not expecting all the pictures of that quality but see these clicks from the contest as examples of bad pictures:

Sudhanwa,
Here are few examples of professionally shot images received in Phase 1:
* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kesari_bhath.jpg
* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salt_lassi.jpg
Please follow our social media channels where we will publish more such pictures in the coming days:
* https://www.facebook.com/WikiLovesFood
* https://twitter.com/WikiLovesFood
Any public facing contest will receive contributions from professionals and amateurs alike. The dynamics of Commons community will ensure that only pictures within the scope of Wikimedia projects will be retained.
For example, the picture you pointed out has already been identified and nominated for deletion.

We are also identifying possible copyright violations. For example, please see
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_...
Maintenance and cleanup work like these is also a part of our work and will continue even after the contest is over.
