Hi everyone
I mentioned the contribute campaign on the mailing list earlier, I wanted to inform everyone that the pages have been set up on Meta. I would like to invite participation from anyone who would like to support the Indian language projects. There are 3 distinct areas that the contribute campaign is going to focus on, the English Wikipedia, the Social Media and the Indic Language wikis.
The Indic language contribute campaign seeks to bring more attention and drive up participation on our local language projects. The essence of the campaign is to turn readers into editors. The motivation is purely to seek non-financial contributions from our readers in the form of edits.
The Contribute campaign page: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010/Contrib
The Indic Language Wikipedias: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010/Contribute_Indic

Hi Salmaan,
I will share my ideas soon. But, please consider using non-hindi / devanagri styled english fonts for indic promotion drives. We are tired seeing this Hindi = India thing everywhere. Please consider that many of the south indian languages have very active wiki communities.

Yes, we should probably rotate various fonts to cover different writing systems. Can someone take a shot at the font used in http://indiagirl35.bloxode.com/images/122486701453.jpeg That would reflect the "curved glyphs" of Tamil and Malayalam, plus Telugu and Kannada to an extent.

Sundar,
need not search for dravidian looking fonts :) just don't project devanagiri looking fonts alone :)
any aesthetic english font is fine.

Ravi,
If we were to do away with the stereotyping of India, one good way is to rotate different styles from different cultures. It would be really nice to showcase the variety in India. If that would be too much trouble, I agree that a neutral message can be preferred.

Hoi, The best proof that Hindi is not doing well comparatively is that the Fundraiser messages has been localised in Malayalam and nothing has been done for the Hindi messages.
As proof of the pudding is in the eating, it is the south of India where the Wikimedia movement is most vibrant. Given that the WMF always supports what is likely to do well, the south is at this moment its best bet. Thanks, GerardM
