Hi everyone,
So recently a Hyderabad event got created on ten.wikipedia.org, and I've received some email about it. However, if you read the page (http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyderabad,_India) you can see it doesn't quite seem to be run by Wikimedians, and I'm concerned by some of the content, such "Wikipedia, as an ultimate resource for Online Media/Marketing" and the fact that is seems to be run solely by a media company.
Does anyone know the editor who created the page or listed contact? I don't want to promote an event that is less about Wikipedia and your work than some random company.
Steven Walling Fellow at the Wikimedia Foundation wikimediafoundation.org
I am surprised that no Wikimedia volunteer from Hyderabad has taken notice or objected to this.
Similarly, as I had mentioned to Steven on his WP10 user talk page, the Bhopal event is being organized by a user who is faking his credentials to gain mileage out of the Wikimedia Movement's good name.
More information available here: http://ten.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bhopal&oldid=11100 http://ten.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Steven_(WMF)&oldid=... http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Arbitrarily0&oldid=4...

Its a common issue with marketing companies like this. The event is for 17th January, I think we should delete the page altogether, there's no sense in promoting something this exploitative on the wrong day.
I recall there were some Wikipedians from Hyderabad, but not sure if thats one of them. Perhaps someone from the chapter might be able to shed more light on this.
In the mean time, I vote to have the page removed or any other that tries to exploit the ten celebration.

Okay, I'm just going to be bold and delete the Hyderabad and Bhopal pages, and explain to these folks that we're only here to support volunteer-led events, not corporate ones et cetera.
If any Wikimedians from either of those cities want to put something up, go for it though.
Thanks for the quick response.

Is there none on the list who can put together one?

Many of the celebrations in India are being organized by small IT companies or PR firms (Amritsar, Chandigarh, Hisar and Jabalpur to name a few): http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:India
I don't think we should have a problem with that, unless:
1. The event is not open to public 2. They are asking for grants or merchandise from the foundation 3. There is evidence of some dupery involved (such as in the Bhopal case).
Most of such meetups and barcamps in India are, in fact, organized by small-time companies or freelancers looking for networking opportunities.

Seems some media company messed up with the Hyderabad page. They replaced the details of the event planned by Hyd community. They should have created a separate page for their event.
I am clearing the mess.
Thanks, Veeven.

I am very skeptical about the effectiveness of small companies, media firms initiating a meetup.
Without at least one single experienced Wikipedian in each venue, the value and authenticity of the event is not guaranteed.
Networking and other stuff may be ok for blog camps and to an extent to linux user groups. But not for an official event of a foundation of like this.
The best way out of this:
Each Ten Wiki party page should list at least 1 to 3 experienced Wikipedians as organizers. They should link their user pages. Also, this event should be announced in either English Wikipedia India portal or respective Indic language village pumps and get their approval.
Community should take this as serious as trademark violation / copyright violation. Else, there are good chance that we send wrong message.

Just now found two events in Tamilnadu organized by people whose wiki involvement is not recognizable. Found a spamy link too. Raised an alert notice in respective pages and left the details in talk pages.
Ravi,
(dropped Hyd mailing list and added wikita-l and Steven Walling into the loop)
Thanks for the alert. Both events do seem suspect.
