Hi,
Tamil Wikipedia added another 1,000+ articles in the last 3 weeks.
Behind this is a remarkable story of 1 user who created 300 articles organically in 20 hours.
P.M.Puniyameen ( http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/user:P.M.Puniyameen ) from Srilanka is a retired academician, prolific writer and independent journalist. He started contributing to Tamil Wikipedia from November 2010. In the short span of 5 months he has added 2000+ articles.
He set himself a target creating 200 articles on 20th April but ended up creating 300 articles in 20 hours. He was helped by his wife, daughter and two colleagues in typing the articles which were mainly info based articles on cricketers, small magazines. Earlier, he even created articles from his bed when he was in a medical rest.
Thought of sharing this story as it is inspiring to see people working with so much dedication, mobilising people and resources for Wikipedia.
Regards,
Ravi
Creating 300 articles in 3 weeks... such news should make us to introspect ; surely should not be encouraged !
Once the news used be like this. " Dr. Modi performed ....many eye operations ..." In my opinion although Dr. Modi was a great eye surgeon, and a great soul-still as for the Eye Operations are concerned he might have not made justice to his profession. This job is not like crushing sugar cane crop !
The above views are mine. I don't care whether any one agrees or not ! -Venkatesh

I would like to add, that the user in question, asked the community's views (well in advance), that if it was ok to undertake such an effort. And there were other editors (including me), constantly checking, proofing, recategorising and maintaining the articles created. This was no slapdash effort. As the articles concerned were start class, we were able to monitor them easily. At least seven persons were involved in this effort - this was no slap dash mass article creation spree.
It was a community effort and the tamil wiki community (which is very conservative when it comes to article size and bulk creation) was unanimously behind this effort. I dont know whether we will be able to duplicate it again, but we will certainly be encouraging such cooperative work in the future.

Lakshmivenkatesh, while I understand your apprehensions, we must understand, that this has catalysed the creation of articles and their further improvement. If you really are worried then read the below paragraph: " In January 2010, at the Monthly Bangalore meetup, there were two representatives of Google present who had come to showcase (read: advertise) their new Translator Toolkit. They had paid several people to use their product, translate certain articles to Hindi, and then publicised it. None of this involved any community discussion, and some articles were deleted instantly. While outsiders praised Google's action as spreading knowledge, Google, blamed the administration on the Hindi Wikipedia for inefficiency and beaurocratic interference." This is what worries me. Google is still out there. Wikipedia is their translation Guinea Pig and they said they were working in further Wikimedia integration for other languages, Tamil included. I commend the incredible acheivements by this editor. Do you have Barnstars on Tamil Wikipedia like we have on English?? Do reward this user with several. : ) -- Regards, Srikanth Ramakrishnan. Sent from my Android phone, please excuse spelling, and typing errors.

Yes, though people were giving out barnstars before, the rate of giving barnstars has grown up these days after the WikiLove localization by Suryaprakash. Wikilove is intended to promote love :) You can read more here at foundation report[1]. Wish more Indic communities localize this and community members pat each others back often to increase the motivation level among growing communities.
And yes, the user is rewarded with several, check out[2]

Srikanth, I saw the link to WikiLove, but I want to know how to use this script. It would be handy if you provided a link to it too. : ) Cheers, Regards, Srikanth.

Correction: 300 articles in 20 hours :)
As Bala said, the articles were mainly based on easily verifiable statistics and well monitored by the community so the quality of the articles were not compromised.
What is noteworthy is not just the number but the fact that people find contributing to Wikipedia worthy enough so they rally their relatives and colleagues to help. This is not an easy feat. But this is one of the best bets to recruit new editors to growing Wikipedias.
