Angry with Wikileaks, Indian Union minister for law and justice Veerappa Moily "lashes against Wikipedia"
".. *Union minister for law and justice Veerappa Moily on Tuesday criticized WikiLeaks for playing havoc in the democracies of many countries. These are all products which create instability in many countries, he said. “Information can also be misleading. There is much controversy over the website Wikipedia, which is used as a first point of reference for many people seeking information. Wikipedia authors are anonymous and literally anyone can post a Wikipedia article on any subject, regardless of whether they are qualified or know much about the subject,” he said ..*."

On the flip side, he got the distinction between Wikileaks and Wikipedia. :)
Thank you.

Getting sick of this popular "urban legand". Why dont we run a site notice banner for "atleast India" alone for 2 months. """ Please Note :- Wikipedia and Wikileaks are 2 different things""" and link to a detailed note. This actually ought to be done on all regions, but when I last checked there was a hue and cry against using site notice for anything at all(including fundraisers). I think its important for Wikipedia to educate people it got nothing to do with Wikileaks and more so in a country like India where already awareness is low.

I think its part of the public education process. More people will be aware of Wikipedia and then know the difference.
We should use this as an opportunity to reach out to more people.

Srikanth, to be fair, I think he does see it as two different things or so the quote implies. What he might incorrectly allude to is a linkage between the two but his criticism of Wikipedia is the model of knowledge creation.

I agree with Srikanth. A simple notive on Meta [as I noticed] isn't enough. We NEED a gigantic banner, [for NOW] across all Wikimedia Projects. Somebody needs to get in touch with WikiLeaks staff and get the same thing done there. Regards,

Honestly, I don't see any reason to quiver.
We should thank good'ol Moily for accidentally publicizing wikipedia at his own expense which I'm sure all his political opponents are going to keep using till the end of his days. He's taken wikipedia now to a much larger swathe of the Indian population - more than any number we could have reached out to - at least now a lot more people know there is such a thing called wikipedia!
India hasn't banned or attacked wikileaks yet as I last remembered; rather the powers that be seem to running scared because of it. In the current scenario where scam after scam is tumbling out, I have seen a greater respect for groups like wikileaks among whoever knows about it; and lesser respect for all those who lash out at it.
In all the conundrum with wikileaks in recent months, poor wikipedia had for all practical reasons gone into obscurity owing to prefix-hijack. Now it suddenly looks like it's back in the game - there's no such thing as bad publicity, after all!
So I'd make light of the matter. Why be afraid of those who are afraid of the truth? If anybody raises anything, tell them fair and square that a member of their country's parliament screwed up.

Nikhil,
While I would love to agree with you, given the turn legislation has been taking in India (e.g. the law governing blogs), I think free communities like Wikipedia and Openstreetmap stand a serious risk at the hands of those who value 'national security', which unfortunately is the perfect way to appeal to the masses and pass Orwellian legislations.
I would not take this lightly at all. A cabinet minister making such a stupid, uninformed statement is not acceptable at all. Its against the basic tenets of freedom.
Cheers, Shalabh

And one more problem has resulted. People are targetting us Wikimedia/Wikipedia users. The other day I was wearing the Wikipedia 10 T-shirt on MG Road in Bangalore and got a yelling in Kannada from a Police Inspector. I didn't exactly understand what he said, but I know he said Wikipedia, Sarkar, Danger. It won't be long before we are targetted on Twitter too. Regards,

Hoi, One thing we can do is reach out to the minister. I did that on my blog. When I get a high quality picture, I will blog about it on my blog and I will propose it as a featured picture.
My point is that our relation with politicians is different from the Wikileaks people, the kind of exposure we give to a politician can be the result of a picture not because of a scandal. Getting this message out helps us to deflect much of the misunderstanding. Thanks, GerardM

Srikanth, to be fair, I think he does see it as two different things or so the quote implies. What he might incorrectly allude to is a linkage between the two but his criticism of Wikipedia is the model of knowledge creation.
At best it could have been the usual misqouting / edit cuts and he might have told about Wikipedia at all. Here is what I think would have happened. He would have got some points to speak from one of his under secretaries who would have sourced it from his/her junior[who might have given what Wikipedia is rightly and might have given it for context due common "wiki" in the name, but might have been lost in grapevine] and hence the miinster would have got it wrong.
Though what the minister was being quoted is a valid criticism against Wikipedia, in all possibilities Wikipedia was never his target. I mentioned this confusion as Urban legand since even few of "Software Engineers" I met dont know the differences. A banner campaign will not only clarify Wikipedia is not associated with Wikileaks, but would also create a larger awareness(includes media and people from all walks of life) on Wikimedia movement(which is lacking to a large extent even among regular readers of Wikipedia in India). Banner campaign is very effective in India and we could see that in Wiki 10 celebrations.
Regards, Srikanth L
I think right now, we can start by sending out a message to everybody who we know? Spread the message? On Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, IRC etc. ? Or wear a T-shirt [I know it's stupid, I can get one though]. I'm serious about all of these, we need to do something. I have had numerous arguments with Juniors at College about this issue. Getting in touch with the Minister isn't really an easy task. As Srikanth said, a banner campaign is a good start. Regards, Srikanth R.

Hi,
Facebook, Twitter campaign by ourselves will help. I can see some doing it already.
The Indian Wikimedia chapter can consider circulating a press release clarifying this.
A banner campaign can be the last resort.
