Dear Indian Community Members,
We take immense pride in letting you know, Wiki Loves Monuments in India https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016_in_India would once again happen in India after a span of 3 years. Earlier this year, Wikimedia India conducted Wiki Loves Green in India 2016 with over 32,000+ images uploaded for the competition https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Earth_2016_in_India by 6,000+ Contributors, a phenomenal response.
Wiki Loves Monuments https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016 is a global photo competition that takes place generally in September. Wikimedia India would officially be organising this competition in India.
The aim of the contest is to ask the general public—readers and users of Wikipedia, photographers, hobbyists, etc.—to take pictures of cultural heritage monuments and upload them to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and its other sister projects.
We request Indian community to help us make this event a grand success. Please sign up as volunteers here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016_in_India < https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2016_in_Indi...
We look forward to your ideas, suggestions and strategies.
Thanks
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I am happy to be in this Wiki India Mailing List.... Before I could involve myself in the community discussions on Wiki, please allow me to post some information about OpenCon
I hope many of you know that during our Wiki Conference at Chandigarh our friends Sailesh, Abhinav, Kavya and others had organised OpenCon 2016 Chandigarh.
A similar satellite event of the main OpenCon 2016 conference would also be happening at Ranchi in the month of November and the date is tentatively fixed as 12th Second Saturday. And it is being organised by the Open Access India http://openaccessindia.org/
The probable venue would be Ranchi University. Still it was not confirmed but most probably it would at Ranchi University.
You may visit the event site at http://www.opencon2016.org/opencon_2016_ranchi and get yourself registered at https://opencon2016ranchi.sched.org/
I am not sure if any Wikipedians are in Ranchi. When we conducted Wikipedia 15 event at Ranchi https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Events/Ranchi, I was not aware about this mailing list and so we could not get Ranchi Wikipedians.
Now, I am sure some of you who are Ranchi or nearby may participate in the event and also speak & share about Wikipedia as Open Educational Resources.
If not able to travel physically, you may also speak via Skye. hangouts or another web tool.
I hope you would be supporting this satellite event as you did for the OpenCon 2016 Chandigarh.
See you
Thanks & Regards Sridhar

Dear All,
Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 had been a great success, recording more than 37,000 images. The organizers would like to take this opportunity and thank everyone for their due support and cooperation.
We would like to bring this to the notice of Indian community, out of the INR 1,35,000 received as a part of the rapid grant, their is a left over balance of INR 59,000. This is after awarding cash prizes to the winners, reimbursement for photo walks, allocation for swags, etc.
The organizing team has decided to reallocate the balance amount for conducting a photo exhibition - cum fund raising campaign. Considering, Wikimedia India still deals with challenges of resolving FCRA issues, this is an attempt to raise domestic money. The photo exhibition would be probably backed with a meet-up or hackathon etc. The program would help in raising person-to-person awareness about Wikipedia and its sister project. It would help in getting estimates on conducting workshops in cities like Delhi etc where community need to be build up and bring in maturity.
The detailed plan and prospects have been listed below
(a) The winning ten images would be displayed along with posters on Wikimedia India, its vision & mission. It will be hosted at Dilli Haat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilli_Haat, New Delhi on April 16 which falls on Sunday along with a festival (Easter), subject to booking. It is a highly visited tourist and recreational place, may refer to en.wikipedia for more details. The entire cost for the program is INR 55,000. This includes rent, images (3*4 feet mat finish), display lights, registration desk for fund raising, etc.
(b) Post exhibition images would be considered as a stock of Wikimedia India. It would be subsequently used be to conduct photo exhibition across India for the same vision. Some of the volunteers in Bhopal and Bengaluru have already volunteered to conduct it in their city.
This is a small pilot experimental initiative of the chapter out of the left over funds. Suggestions for the same would be appreciated.
Thanks
