Dear All,
The Centre for Internet & Society (CIS) is seeking applications for the
position of Research Associate, to support its Access to Knowledge (A2K)
Programme <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K>.
The research associate is expected to support the larger goals of the
programme, which include growth of Indian language Wikipedias, related
Wikimedia projects and the contributor communities. Your primary
responsibility will be to undertake research on selected topics relevant to
key areas of programmatic work. For the present year, the focus will be on
studying challenges and efforts to bridge the gender gap/bias on Indian
language Wikimedia projects, exploring possibilities of collaboration with
organizations working on building resources related to gender and
sexuality, and assisting with a baseline study on Wikisource in India.
Given present restrictions on movement due to the pandemic, this would be
a remote, full-time position until further notice. We encourage
applications from individuals identifying as women, LGBTQIA+ and of gender
non-conforming identity and sexual orientation. The deadline for
applications is Friday, August 6, 2021.
Please read the detailed call for applications here:

Movement Strategy and Governance, Wikimedia Foundation
Namaste to Fellow-Wikimedians of India,
Greetings. I hope everything is well with you.
Elections to fill 4 community seats in Wikimedia Foundation's board of
Trustees is going to happen during 4-17 of August 2021. I am happy to
announce my candidature for the Wikimedia Foundation's Board Elections.
Here is my candidacy page for the same:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/Candida…
.
In my Wikimedia experience, I am involved in improving content, working
towards community growth, planning and executing projects, and movement
governance. I have played several roles and contributed to several
activities within Indian Wikimedia movement. Contributing to Telugu
Wikipedia as one of the admins and active user, Working as Community
Advocate for CIS-A2K (Until August 2019), Taking part in Movement strategy
process as member of Community Health working group, Co-organising
conferences, Planning and rolling out projects are some of them. I am
currently working as Community Manager at Quora
<https://te.quora.com/profile/Pavan-Santhosh-Surampudi> where I work
involves building and managing Quora’s Telugu community across the world as
my day job. My activities, associations, & contributions in movement
allowed me to interact and collaborate with many of you earlier.
My work in community building, governance, and partnerships in a country
like India with diverse opportunities entangled with complex issues helped
me to have a unique experience and insights that will be helpful for me in
my work as a Board member. Working with several Wikimedia Community members
from India, helped me to understand South Asian communities, along with the
larger global south, lacking in terms of resources, support and awareness
which is hindering global diversity and growth.
As our communities have great opportunities to work with, this is infact
resulting in a great opportunity cost. The Wikimedia movement has a great
potential to make a lasting impact on even more people where current
government and societal structures are neglecting and keeping them away
from the availability of knowledge. Current issues like less diversity,
centralized power, harassment and lack of adoption to rapidly growing
technological aspects are hindering the Wikimedia movement's progress in
this direction.
We, as a movement, can change this by empowering stakeholders (like
Affiliates, Wikimedians, etc.,), investing in leadership and skill
development, making boards more accessible to community members and other such
steps
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/Candida…>.
I am strongly motivated to contribute to these important aspects by serving
as a board member to Wikimedia Foundation.
I request you to support my candidature. I am happy to answer any questions
you have. Please connect me through my email id <pavansanthosh.s(a)gmail.com>
or meta-wiki user talk page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Pavan_santhosh.s>.
Thank you,
Pavan Santhosh Surampudi.

the community were asked to submit their candidacy. After a three-week-long

community and affiliate trustees. The Board is expected to afterwards
select the four most-voted candidates to serve as trustees, starting in
September, for a term of three years.
How can you get involved?

activities for the campaign period. These activities can be found on the Board

Community members are encouraged to organize activities in their own

remain respectful of their time since candidacy can be very time-consuming.
Please list activities you organize on the Board election page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikimedia_Foundation_ele…>
on
Meta so that more people can find them. Facilitators

- There is a meetup being planned for community members from or
associated with South Asia, to interact with the candidates, on 30 July and
1 August. More details on that will be shared next week.
Please spread the word so that more people can support finding the best
candidates to help guide the Wikimedia Foundation and support the needs of
the movement over the next few years.

Dear Friends from the Indian Wikimedian Community,
An important election of community volunteers to the Board of Trustess was
announced by the Wikimedia Fondation on MetaWiki in mid-June. You can
access more details about this election here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021
This was also announced on this list on 25 June by Krishna Chaitanya Velaga

The forthcoming Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Community Election
2021 is a great opportunity for our Indian Wikimedian community. The Board
of Trustees is the highest forum that governs the Foundation. It decides
the course of action to be taken for the present and the future. It
allocates resources and decides what are the priorities.
Four seats are up for election this time, and represents a great
opportunity for our community to get one or more of our representatives
elected.
India is likely the world’s largest user of Wikimedia Projects among
nations. The Indian Community is one of the world’s most diverse, large
communities in Wikimedia with 96 projects in 27 languages. However, the
Indian Community has no representation in the Board even today.
The Indian Wikimedian Community can ensure their voice is heard in the WMF
simply by voting for a member of our Community to this post. We can ensure
that our concerns and matters that are important to us are discussed and
that we also get equitable access to resources and priority for our cause.
I would like to inform you that I am now a candidate in the forthcoming
election for Community volunteer seats of the WikiMedia Foundation’s Board
of Trustees.
I am an active member of Indian English language and Marathi language
Wikimedian communities. I have been an active online editor since 25 March
2006, and became an offline activist of the Pune Wikimedian Community in
January 2011. Since then, I have been deeply involved in conducting
training sessions in the culture of Wikimedia and basic editing skills in
many cities over many years. I have also mentored many young Wikimedians
and informally advised CIS-A2K, Chapter, etc.
You can access more details on my candidacy page on MetaWiki here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/Candida…
My vision for Wikimedia Movement is:
“an equitable, sustainable, safe, inclusive, accessible Wikimedia movement
that presents the knowledge of the world to all parts of humanity in a
manner best suited to the needs of the many communities.”
I have remained an unpaid volunteer because I believe that being a paid
employee or consultant of WMF would cause a conflict of interest with my
values. I believe this is an essential requisite for being a member of the
Board of Trustees as well.
Based on my Wikimedia experience with the Indian community, both online and
offline, my real life-experience, and my independence from the Foundation
and its affiliates, I feel confident of representing the Global South
faithfully, of which the Indian Community is a very important part.
In this election, besides me, we have a number of other good candidates
standing for election as well. I urge you all to visit the site links given
above and learn as much as you can about the election and these candidates,
so that you make an informed choice. The election is on 4 August 2021 so
there is adequate time for you to do this.

Hello all,
We are happy to announce that a new tool <https://bodh.toolforge.org/>,
named Bodh, has been developed by Jay Prakash
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Jay_(CIS-A2K)>, as a CIS-A2K
assignment, to add or modify statements for lexemes, senses and forms.
This tool presents lexicographical data in tabular format generated from
SPARQL queries or from manual lists. Users can switch whether to work on
lexeme proper, sense or form and add or modify statements there.
The idea of this tool was inspired by the one and only Magnus Manske's
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q13520818> Tabernacle
<https://tabernacle.toolforge.org/#/> which helps editors to add or modify
statements, labels, descriptions and aliases for Wikidata's entity data.
The tool is going to be documented here
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Bodh>. Users of this tool can
request for more features or report for bugs using this phabricator project
profile <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/5166/>.
Happy editing!
Regards,
Bodhisattwa
Wikidata Co-ordinator, CIS-A2K
Dear Indic Wikimedians,
As you may already know, *Movement Charter* is a key priority of Movement
Strategy. The Movement Charter will be a document defining roles and
responsibilities for all the members and entities of the Wikimedia
Movement, including laying out a new Global Council for movement
governance. A broad ratification process is expected for its adoption. One
of the first steps in the process is to constitute a *Movement Charter
drafting committee*.
To gather inputs from community members regarding forming this
committee, a *regional
event* is being organized on *25 June 2021 (Friday) from 6:30 pm to 8 pm
(IST)*. This event is a part of several regional conversations that will
lead up to the global conversations.
The discussion will mainly be focused on the following questions:
- What composition should the committee have in terms of movement roles,
gender, regions, affiliations and other diversity factors?
- What is the best process to select the committee members to form a
competent and diverse team?
- How much dedication is it reasonable to expect from committee members,
in terms of hours per week and months of work?
You can join the meeting at: https://meet.google.com/sef-gwes-imx
Note: You may also send in your responses to the above questions via email
if you prefer it that way.
Thank you
