Dear colleagues,
Please see below:

Subject: Please help makes our grants program more accessible!
To: "Local Chapters, board and officers coordination (closed subscription)"
<internal-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear colleagues,
After Siebrand had given me a demonstration of the fantastic new Translate
extension, I realized we are now able to take a big step forward in making
the Wikimedia Grants program more accessible to our colleagues around the
world.
I therefore ask for your help in translating
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index into as many languages as
possible, to ensure those seeking funding can find useful information in
their own language.
(Note: I have already posted this request on translators-l, but I know
there are folks on this list from language communities not represented on
translators-l, and I would like your help in spreading this request to the
local lists and village pumps you're active in.)
I have tried to make that page as concise and as clear as possible, though
there is a somewhat unavoidable level of detail required because people
actually need all this information to submit grant proposals.
Nevertheless, if, during translation, you encounter something that's
unclear, contradictory, or just weird, please don't hesitate to call it
out, on this thread, on the talk page, or privately to me.
Just go to the Grants program page above, and click the "Translate this
page" link near the top.
Thanks in advance for your help! I appreciate it greatly.

Hello everyone,
You've probably heard about the online "Wikiacademy" that Nitika announced
around a week ago; we recently conducted that session on Saturday (10 March
2012) on Google+ Hangout.
Six participants signed up - one informed day before about her absence,
two did not show up at all, one could not log into Google hangout, one was
able to attend the first part of the session but then lost his internet
connection and eventually we had only one participant who attended the
entire session. That's what happened at the online outreach event organised
last Saturday, 10th March.
It wasn't particularly an impressive session in terms of turnout - we were
expecting all six guys to show up and take part. But even if these 2
participants show interest and edit on regular basis I'd call this event a
success - a success rate of 33%.
I'd like to discuss few things that we should definitely keep in mind
before we organize similar events:
1. Request only those people to register who are sure to have a stable
internet connection. Some students were trying to log in for the session
but their hostel/school connections was extremely unstable. Im not sure if
there is a way for making sure that they have stable connections but it is
really important. (I can also see where this might be difficult, because
not many can give any guarantees on the reliability of their net
connections)
2. Invariably we'll have few people who'll drop out at the last moment or
are not able to join leaving room for someone else to join in. Hence for
such events we should probable overbook a session. If one drops out,
another one could attend the session instead. This will make sure that
we're utilizing our resources and time to the fullest.
3. Ask the participants to do a test google hangout a day or two before the
actual event. This will make sure that the participants are not facing any
technical issues and can attend the session seamlessly.
4. Maybe at the time of registration we need to ask participants for their
phone numbers. We sent reminders to the participants by way of email but
yet 2 of them did not show up. It could be that the didn't not read the
mails well in time. If we had their phone numbers we could have
messaged/called to send them a gentle reminder.
5. We could also send across some useful links and videos for the
participants to go through before the session. This way participants will
be warmed up and more informed for the session. It will also give the
participants enough time to jot down all their queries and get them
clarified during the session.
>From my personal opinion, online outreach is something that can definitely
work. Sitting in Bangalore I was able to train guys from Nepal & Mangalore.
I'm hoping that they'll become active editors in English and in their
respective native languages. Im really happy to note that at least one of
them has already edited several articles in the medical space - which is
his field of study.
I'd also like to thank Deepon - he'd put in a lot of time and effort for
helping us conduct this session.
Many thanks of course to Nitika, who requested me to conduct the session,
and who was omnipresent throughout the session, and took over from me
whenever my net connection gave way (Another point: we need to somehow make
sure that the instructors themselves have a good net connection).
Hoping to conduct more sessions like these.
Thanks

Hello all,
I am currently in Kolkata, and upon reaching here two days ago, a fellow
community member, Sucheta, had informed me that her college, Netaji Subhash
Engineer College, Garia was organizing a tech fest, Avenir
2012<http://www.avenir.net.in>from 16th of March to the 18th of March.
As such I got in touch with her
college organizers and with Sucheta's help we were able to procure a stall
for free. We might even get a hall if possible.
I really wanted the lab for an edit-o-thon but that is very hard to
procure. I also relayed the message to both Jayanta da as well as WMF
office in Delhi as they had organized an academy in the same college.
We really need volunteers for the event, so anyone who can give their
precious time please do join us. It would be awesome if all you guys came.
I'd really love to meet the Kolkata community also.
What I was planning was that, we concentrate more on uploading pics on
commons, pronunciation drive (i.e. easier ways to contribute than writing
articles) because young people in fests will hopefully respond better to
such stuff. Also wanted to spread the word about WP:India and Indic
languages. I need a lot of help so would really appreciate any volunteers.
Can reward with cupcakes (virtual of course). :)
Please guys, whoever, can, do attend, this will be Kolkata's first outreach
in a fest, if I am not wrong, if its not, then doesn't matter, it will be
an outreach in Kolkata and all of us really need to know what's the right
formula and practice makes you perfect they say. :)
Will create a page about this in en:Wiki and WM-IN soon. See you tomorrow
guys, sharp at 10 am (hopefully). :)

Hello Hyderabad,
Sorry for the short notice on this one. Few invites & requests:
a) I am traveling to Hyderabad on work and thought it would be really sweet to catch up for tea/coffee or dinner on Friday March 16th. Maybe we could have a community meet-up to celebrate Telugu's 50k articles! (We are trying to fix up a venue; I will tell those interested asap.)
b) I'm combining my trip with an outreach session at ISB Hyderabad on Saturday March 17th at the ISB Campus. The initial plan was to have a general intro to Wikipedia but they have agreed to have a wiki workshop instead. They have specifically told me that there is interest in both Indic and English language. If anyone's interested, would love your help! The page is here.
c) Also, if there is anyone who is interested in conducting outreach sessions but isn't sure how it's done, do join me for the ISB session. The team has been working really hard at improving outreach effectiveness and I'd love to give you a sense of what it looks like.
d) Lastly, if you know anyone else who might be interested in attending the wiki workshop as a newbie , I will try and work something out.
If you're interested in either the meet up on Friday evening or getting you or your friends to the session on Saturday morning, would you drop me a line offlist (hisham(a)wikimedia.org)
Best

Forwarding a report published by Wikimedia Bangladesh regarding an
unconference organized in Chittagong. According to Tanvir, at least 300
participants attended.

Subject: Re: [Foundation-l] Bangla Wikipedia Unconference 2012 in Chittagong
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello everyone,
I am so pleased to announce that Wikimedia Bangladesh, with the help of
Independent University, Bangladesh, Chittagong, and Bangladesh Open Source
Network, organized the first Bangla Wikipedia Unconference 2012 [1] in
Chittagong [2] to promote Bangla Wikipedia [3] in Bangladesh. This outreach
event was held in 2 and 3 of March and was attended by around 300
participants. It was first big-level program of Wikimedia Bangladesh and it
was outside of the Dhaka (the capital) to focus on country-wide outreach.
We called it an "unconference" to give it a less formal look and to make
the appearance more welcoming.
This two days event was inaugurated by the Chittagong City Mayor and and in
the last it was attended by the Since and Technology minister of Bangladesh
Government. It was also attended by some other popular public figures,
writers, and university professors, and media personalties. During the
unconference we had events like workshops, photo exhibition, cultural
program, seminars, article writing contest, etc. We had several teams from
the schools, colleges, and universities in Chittagong as team participants.
The unconference was hosted by Chittagong campus of Independent University,
Bangladesh. You can see the some of the images of the events in the Commons
category [4].
Because of the presence of the popular public figures and government
officials, the event got a significant amount of media coverage in national
print and electronic media. We also even had billboards in the city's main
crossings to let people know about Bangla Wikipedia which was the main
purpose of this event and current strategic priority of Wikimedia
Bangladesh.
Wikimedia Bangladesh wants to thank everyone who supported us. We want to
thank our sponsors and donors who helped us to arrange this big event. We
want thank Wikimedia Foundation director Sue Gardner for her nice video
speech that we screened in the inaugural ceremony. And of course to our
participants, who eventually made this effort a success. And I apologize to
let you guys know about this event in late. We are still working on putting
everything on wiki.

All of us have already heard that Encyclopedia Britannica, the world’s
best-known and most-reliable reference encyclopedia that was first
published more than two centuries ago, will no longer be available in

The editors also announced that the online edition of Britannica,
