Dear All,
When I wrote about the digitization in Wikisource using
DjVu<http://shijualex.wordpress.com/2012/03/24/digitization-of-books-in-wikisour…>few
Indic language community members asked me the following question.
When we are able to store the books in its graphic format say PDF/DjVu
> format. what is the need to type it? why not let it be as it is, the reader
> will read it in its graphic format."
This question is very important from Indic wikimedian's perspective. The
immediate answer I could give is about the importance of *searchable* and *
reusable* text.
But when I discussed this topic with Amir Aharoni (a multi language
wikimedian, which includes Indic languages also :)). Amir shared with me
lot of other important topics about this, which helped me
to understand that digitization in Wikisource is more than
about searching and reusing.
The result of our discussion turned out to be blog post. Here it is:
http://aharoni.wordpress.com/2012/03/27/the-advantages-of-wikisource/ In
this blog post Amir discusses about the Advantages of Digital Texts in
Wikisource. Kindly share your comments.
Thanks

WikiProject India recently crossed 100,000 articles! This means that more than 100k articles on English Wikipedia are specific to India.
[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_India (Thanks to Vasu VR and Ssriram MT for pointing out - note due to lag in toolserver, the figure still shows as 98k, but if you check categories, its crossed 100k)
Hey Folks,
This is a summary of the Wikipedia
Workshop<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Workshop/Delhi_Workshop_4>
at Jamia Millia Islamia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamia_Millia_Islamia> (JMI)
on 22nd March, 2012.
Sheel Sindhu Manohar
(User:Roboture<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Roboture>)
student of JMI, is a Wikipedia contributor. Being actively involved in
Wikipedia monthly meet-ups in Delhi, he invited us to conduct an Editing
Workshop at his campus and looked after all the arrangements. I'd really
like to thank him for helping us organize this session.
The idea behind the workshop was to explain participants about the basics
of Wikipedia, Community involvement, 5 Pillars, Notability, basics of
Editing together with hands-on editing session.
Most of the participants were students of Jamia and other colleges in NCR.
Before starting, I asked participants about their views on Wikipedia and
they responded with answers like: Its an encyclopedia, Knowledge sharing
platform and also some raised doubts about content verification as well.
So, I began with introducing basics of Wikipedia, who edits Wikipedia, few
Wikipedia policies, importance of Citations etc. Then, we moved on to
explain about the various Tabs on Wiki page followed by telling the
importance of Notability of the article and of providing references. We
selected the article on Bhelpuri
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhelpuri> (participants
choice) to show the anatomy of an article. We then stopped for a tea break
for ten minutes and asked uninterested participants to feel free and leave
the session and invited only the interested one's to remain present for the
hands-on editing session.
After the break, it was nice to witness more than 90% of the participants
returning for the session. Before starting the actual editing,
User:Nitika.t<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nitika.t> gave
some tips on the selection of articles for editing. We selected the article
on Najeeb Jung <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Najeeb_Jung> (VC of JMI) and
started improving. We asked participants to come and edit the article. They
improved the language, linked other Wiki articles, added references etc.
In the end User:Roboture <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Roboture> discussed
about editing Hindi Wikipedia articles and
User:Psubhashish<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Psubhashish> also
told the importance of manual translation instead of using translation
tools for editing in other languages.
Bests,
Piyush Aggarwal
