Dear All,
Wikimedia India chapter has organized a Wiki Academy in Jaya Engineering
College in Chennai on 11 December 2011. The detailed summary below:
Introduction
The first Wiki Academy in Jaya Engineering college was organized by the
Wikimedia chapter and co-hosted by Jaya FOSS Club, a faculty-student wing
of Computer Science department, Jaya Engineering College which promotes
and organize events related to FOSS (Free and Open Source movement) and is
the only FOSS club in the whole state. Prof. Kumaran, HOD - Computer
Science Dept, Prof. Prabhakaran, student volunteers of Jaya FOSS Club
Naresh Aravindh, Baabu Aravind V S, Sankey Thukral and Saran Raj
volunteered for conducing the event. The academy started at 10.30 AM with a
formal inauguration by Prof. Natarajan, HOD - Textile Engineering who
introduced the agenda of the Wiki Academy to the audience. Prof Prabhakaran
then gave a brief talk about the academy and Jaya FOSS Club and gave a
token of appreciation to Dr. Natarajan for the speech. Subhashish, member,
Wikimedia India Chapter gave a small talk about the main agenda of the
academy and connected the audience with Hisham Mundol, Consultant, India
Programs, Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) via Google Hangout. Hisham interacted
with the audience by giving a talk about the nature of the event, few
details about Wikipedia, WMF and Chapter and foundation are trying to do in
India. He answered questions raised by the audience. Nitika Tandon,
Consultant, Participation at WMF was also present virtually.
Academy
*How to Edit Wikipedia*
Subhashish explained basics of Wikipedia, how it is edited by millions of
volunteers, how Wikipedia is exclusively encyclopedic and kind of articles
and notability of articles in Wikipedia, how Wikipedians communicate and
form community, and organization of Wikimedia foundations and active
projects. Then he took the audience through active editing by signing up,
searching for articles, choosing articles to create. Then he demonstrated
about creating an article by using the Edit toolbar, citing the text by
searching the web and uploading and adding pictures in articles.
Q&A session
After the editing session is over there was a question and answer round
where the speaker answered questions related to editing.
Closing talk
Nitika was formally introduced to the audience by Subhashish. Nitika then
explained about the India Education program (IEP), how it functions and the
student-teacher-foundation collaborations through the education program.
She took the audience though the Pune IEP, how foundation reached to
several colleges in Pune via Campus Ambassadors, engagingt of students by
increasing student-teacher interaction and outcome of the program. Post to
her talk there was a Q&A and interaction round.
With the closing talk from Nitika, a closing talk was delivered to the
audience by the speaker. Feedback and participation forms were distributed
and the audience gathered for a group photograph.
Future plans if any
*Potential areas to work upon*:
- *More technological live sessions*:
Being an engineering college of more than 60 volunteers in the Jaya FOSS
Club, a club promoting FOSS (Free & opensource software) initiatives this
has a incubation capability to bring up more leaders in Technology. The
HOD, Prof. M. Kumaran, Asst Prof. G. Prabhakaran, student volunteers Naresh
Aravindh and Baabu Aravind V S showed a lot of interest for technological
events in the college. WMF staff contractor Santhosh Thottingal could be
contacted for a webinar with the FOSS Club members and faculty to
understand their interest based on which there could be a possible
technical event like a mini Hackathon in the college. The college has a
decent infrastructure in terms of connectivity and outreach.
- *Interest group for Tamil Wiki initiatives*:
The entire audience was Tamil speaking, surprisingly none of them were not
aware of the existence of Tamil Wikipedia. So, further communication could
be established with the Tamil Wiki Community as majority of the
participants were interested for a Tamil Wiki initiatives. Sengai Poduvan,
the veteran Tamil Wikipedian who was awarded as a noteworthy Wikipedian
during WCI must be invited for a talk to the next Tamil Wiki Academy which
will inspire the audience to contribute more for Tamil Wiki initiatives.
- *Foundation of a Wiki-Club*:
Prof. G. Prabhakaran, Computer Science dept brought a proposal for a
Wiki-Club by engaging the Jaya FOSS volunteers which could organize
recurrent Wiki events in the campus. The FOSS club is already interacting
with many Open source academicians, speakers and researchers from major
institutes like IIT, Madras. FOSS Activities in India is taking a
progressive shape and it could be used for more collaborative Wiki
initiatives to bring up more editors.

Dear All,
I am sharing the statistical report of Indian language wiki projects for
the month of 2011 October. It is available here.
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/12/12/indian-language-wikipedia-statistics-…
Some interesting facts that I discovered this month are:
- Nearly *4.3 crore* readers are there for all Indic language
wikipedias! This number is huge and increased by nearly 1/3 in just 1
month! So Indic wikis has huge reader base.
- Marathi wiki community has increased its active editor base by nearly
33% in just 1 month.
- Sanskrit wikipedia has been amongst the shining stars of *all* Indic
language wikipedias in terms of adding new articles (12 new articles every
day in October) and edits per article (nearly 18 edits across all articles,
old and new.)
You can find more interesting facts from the report at
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/12/12/indian-language-wikipedia-statistics-…

Hello,
I dont see India Programs Staff being mentioned in this page[1]. Is there a
specific reason to it? IIRC number of employees / contractors from this
page is important since goes to fundraising appeal numbers. While it is
said that 95 staff, am not sure if some there are more are missed out like
this. Can someone take it and forward and update. Thanks!

Dear All
As you might be aware, we've been have a monthly call between the India Chapter and India Programs team. Since we last updated you, we have had 2 calls and also a face-to-face meeting after WikiConference. Here's an update on these meetings.
I must beforehand apologize for being so late on updating you on these calls / meetings. Shall endeavor to be more on schedule going forward.
Do share your feedback and comments. Do let us know if there are any clarifications we can provide.
Thursday November 9th (Voice Conference) [Arjun, Arun, Naveen, Sudhanwa, Tinu, Asaf & Hisham]
India Programs Update
India Trust has been set up and a formal announcement will be made shortly on this matter.
India Education Program has encountered significant problems with regard to copy-pasted material. While efforts have been made (including asking for help from Online Ambassadors), in-class sessions from Campus Ambassadors (in almost every single class of the program), asking for intervention from faculty, asking students only to work on sandboxes, etc., the situation remained particularly serious at College of Engineering, Pune. As a result, the program was suspended at this college. It currently runs at 1 class at Symbiosis School of Economics (while the other classes there have concluded their assignments) and at 1 class at SNDT Women's University.
Specifically, the lessons learnt on the pilot were discussed. These included scale, choice of faculty, choice of classes, inadequate engagement and communication with en-wp community, modifications to Campus Ambassador training going forward, modifications to student training going forward, etc. It was pointed out that a comprehensive and honest learnings exercise would be undertaken.
Recruitment of additional team members (for Communications and for Team Support) have been delayed because the right candidate was not available.
The initial work on the Indic Languages initiatives would start off with preliminary discussions and data analysis of the various language projects. This will help to build a picture with both experience and data of the current state, challenges, opportunities and potential of the various projects. Eventually, the objective will be to identify potential pilots and language communities that might be interested in these pilots.
Chapter Update
Arjun said that as Wikipedia is always evolving with contributions of community, any project needs to be carefully planned and executed to minimize the load on community. We had some experiences with Google Translate project, which received adverse reaction from wikipedian community. Even if Foundation undertakes an initiative, there is a possibility of similar adverse response. He hoped that we can use this experience to improve future project planning.
Sunday November 20th (Face to Face Meeting) [Arjun, Arun, Naveen, Sudhanwa, Tinu, Barry & Hisham]
India Programs Update
Point of View was shared about the nature of communication and co-operation between the Chapter and India Programs. It was pointed out that all the activities of India Programs have been in line with the publicly available page at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs. The monthly co-ordination calls that the Chapter EC had initaited and that are now being regularly undertaken is useful and must be continued. Chapter EC requested prior information on activities and it was suggested by India Programs (and agreed by Chapter EC) that all important announcements would be sent to the Chapter EC 48 hours before being shared publicly.
The nature of the work that was happening on Indic Languages initiatives was shared (including the kinds of discussions and how these discussions were being conducted) and that Shiju will shortly start sharing the updates of language discussions with the community.
The learnings process of the India Education Program was shared - including the fact that data gathering was going to be commenced and that the learnings would inform the next steps of the project. Nitika will shortly update the community about how these learnings were going to be gathered. It was reiterated that the plans going forward would be finalized only after a thorough review of the program was conducted.
It was proposed to identify potential areas where the Chapter EC and India Programs would work collaboratively.
Chapter Update
Arjun said that it is essential to have clarity on the focus areas of WMF and identify projects where WMF and WMIN could work together. Arun suggested the need for a governance framework for the various activities in India.
Arjun summarized the focus of Wikimedia India on Wiki academies and Strengthening City/Language SIGs. Preliminary discussions around Regional Conferences, GLAM, Wiki loves monuments and Knowledge Kiosks are in progress.
He explained how Knowledge Kiosks pilot, where visitors to public libraries can access Wikipedia through tablet computers in the language of their choice can be a great help for reaching out to the population, who can't afford computers and Internet. He suggested that it can be a good collaborative project and requested India programs support. India programs could take care of program management and dealing with Library organizations and vendors. Chapter would help in training library personnel and users in the various pilot locations. Hisham suggested inviting fellowships for such a project. Arjun opined that organizational help is really needed to do such projects. It is agreed to have further discussions on this topic after sharing additional information.
Wednesday November 23rd (Voice Conference) [Arjun, Arun, Naveen, Sudhanwa & Hisham]
India Programs Update
Ambiguity around the two entities "India Programs" and "India Trust" were clarified. India Programs is the team of consultants (currently, Hisham, Shiju & Nitika) who are working as consultants to WMF. Once the funding for the Wikimedia India Program Trust is sorted out (after the appropriate funding has the necessary approvals), these consultants will transition to the Trust. Until then, the Trust is an organisation that has been registered by has no funds available and therefore will not undertake any activities
An update was shared the the Trust was going to be filing for the necessary taxation related applications (Sections 12A and 80G) as well as FCRA Prior-Permission in the next few days. An update will be shared after these have been done.
A discussion was made on the Chapter EC proposal for Chapter & India Programs to work together on the Knowledge Kiosks initiative of the Chapter. India Programs indicated their preference not to work on projects that require such intensive effort in infrastructure building (both hardware and connectivity.) It was also recommended that the Chapter carefully consider their involvement in such initiatives especially given the kind of effort that will be required in stuff like procurement.
It was proposed that the Chapter EC and India Programs work collaboratively on at least 2 broad areas: supporting community outreach & community building (especially volunteer mobilization) as well PR & social media with Chapter EC. Both areas are aspects where India Programs can bring capability to the table and are areas of interest to members of the Chapter EC.
An update was shared on the meeting with the Ministry of HRD regarding potential collaboration with Aakash tablet. The meeting was extremely positive and holds potential. Hisham will be sharing an update to the community on the next steps on this after some additional discussions.
It was proposed that a discussion commence that will collaboratively arrive at a draft document that provide clarity to how Chapter EC and the India Trust can work together. This will be in the nature of definition of roles.
Chapter Update
Arjun said that with the kind of resources that the India Programs Trust will have access, it can take up challenging projects like Knowledge Kiosks as it can certainly outsource stuff that can not done by Trust. It is agreed to continue the discussion on this topic.

ANNOUNCING A NEW WIKIPROJECT
(WikiProject Offline Wikipedia for Indian Schools)
Dear friends,
This is to announce the beginning of a new project for WikiProject
India - WikiProject
Offline Wikipedia for Indian Schools (OWIS). For quite some time now, there
has been a need for an offline wikipedia compilation suitable to Indian
schools. There are, and have always been, a whole lot of Indian schools and
students out there who do not have access to an English encyclopedia. The
web has killed off a whole range of printed encyclopedias and factbooks
besides paid encyclopedia packages such as Encarta. If the school does not
provide wide-spread, regular and dependable access to the web. then the
students have zilch. So, keeping in mind that English Wikipedia has been
around for more than a decade and has more than enough material for an
encyclopedia, we began this project so that all interested people could
pitch in and collectively prepare such offline compilations which are the
need of the hour.
About the Wikiproject
To do this, we began a new WikiProject in English Wikipedia, daughter to
WikiProject India. Titled WikiProject Offline Wikipedia for Indian
Schools(OWIS), it is intended to be the umbrella WikiProject for all
Indian
versions of offline English language wikipedias for students and
communities. The WikiProject will concentrate on content issues and leave
the production to a team of technically oriented guys from the community
(to be decided later).
You can read about the WikiProject page here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Offline_Wikipedia_for_In…
Under this WikiProject, it is proposed to provide a variety of compilations
suitable for various needs, such as a full offline encyclopedia, single
disc collations on topics related to India etc.
The first project
To begin with, we felt it is best to create a single DVD compilation with
all subjects covered in sufficient detail. We have named it as Offline
Wikipedia for Indian Schools (Full version) or OWIS-FULL (in short).
It is based on and will be similar to the SOS Children’s Village Offline
Wikipedia for School which you can checkout for yourself at this link:
http://schools-wikipedia.org/
The project page for this first project is here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Offline_Wikipedia_for_Indian_Sc…
The SOS village compilation is CD based with approximately 6500 articles
based on the British educational syllabus. Naturally, it contains a large
number of topics relevant only to the UK and has a distinct Western flavour
in its overall choice too, which is only natural.
To make this compilation suitable for our environment, we will have to not
only add a whole host of new articles on Indian topics to the compilation
but also remove topics/articles irrelevant to Indian students. In addition,
the SOS Children’s Encyclopaedia, being in existence for the last few
years, is designed to fit on a CD with the consequence that the number of
articles on a subject cover a subject satisfactorily but skimpily. Since we
plan our compilation to be on a DVD, there is scope to improve coverage on
all subjects as well. Hence it is planned to have in the region of around
9000 articles.
So where are we now? As a first step we have established the framework in
the form of the WikiProject and pages where one can work. The list of
topics from the SOS compilation has been prepared subjectwise. These lists
need to be vetted/improved/extended and then finalised.
As of now, six subjects have been opened up for topic selection - Art, IT,
Maths, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. We need motivated editors to join
the teams and pitch in. The selection of topics needs to be completed in
ten days time so that we can move on to other subjects, other tasks.
So, if this venture interests you, if you want to do something really
important with us, if you agree with our proposition that this is critical
for delivering the potential of Wikipedia to digitally-challenged
communities, sign up here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Offline_Wikipedia_for_In…
All the best to all of us to successfully complete this vital project.
This email is being reflected on Wikimedia India list for information. But
If you would like to respond to this, please respond to on the English
Wikipedia for India mailing list -
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-in-en
Everyone is welcome to subscribe to it.
