I just discovered DekiWiki (http://doc.opengarden.org/DekiWiki) and thought I'd share it with others on this list (I don't believe it has been mentioned on here before).
DekiWiki is a fork of MediaWiki (appears to be based on the 1.4.x line). They have provided numerous features that many on this list desire from MediaWiki, including WYSIWYG, granular access permissions, a definite page hierarchy, and per-page attachments. It is worth noting that the target audience and desired usage of DekiWiki is substantially different from MediaWiki's. I would say DekiWiki is more like Confluence or XWiki than MediaWiki. As such, many of the MediaWiki features you have grown to love (including the wiki syntax) are not included. So, evaluate with care.
I'm not trying to incite rage against MediaWiki or actively praise DekiWiki, I'm just trying to spread the word. The MediaWiki developers will acknowledge that MediaWiki serves a targeted audience and getting MediaWiki to play nice in some environments (per-page access permissions, for example) is like pounding a square peg in a round hole. Well, DekiWiki might be your round peg and you might even be able to salvage your MediaWiki knowledge when it comes to hacking DekiWiki.
Cheers,

And of course it's GPL! Is there any likelihood of missing much-desired features for MediaWiki being ported from it or at least inspired?

Hello,
I have a brandnew trunk 1.10 installation, installed in german, on a windows xampp system.
I was trying special characters on article names.
I tried "sandbox\s". This is what happened:
a) Search for sandbox\s: outcome like usual, no hit b) edit and preview of sandbox\s: outcome like usual c) save: I got a blank page with an error: 404
But: the page got saved!
d) Search for sandbox\s: error page: 404
Can anyone tell me, what is wrong or confirm this bug?
regards GunterS
Hallo Günther,
1. I can _not_ confirm this, works in my 1.10@Debian 2. Try 1.9.x, the latest stable release. 1.10 is alpha and not released as stable. 3. If you open a new topic (=new question), do not post to the list by answering to a question (you replyed to the topic "dekiWiki", and your question is not related to this!)
Regards, Jan

Hallo Jähn,
thanks for the quick reply. Same problem with 1.9
h$$p://localhost/w19/index.php/Spezial:Suche?search=Sandbox%5Cs
On the error page, it says, that the link of the referring page does not exist:
h$$p://localhost/trunk/index.php%3ftitle=Sandbox%255Cs&action=submit
there is a 25 inserted.
I have a default installation.
Gruß Gunter
