Trying to install my mediwiki on my server and it's saying the /config/index.php is not found. However, it said an alternative was available /config/index.html this just brings me to my hosts login page. I don't get it, i don't have an index.html!

Some hosts alias /config/ to a custom configuration page. Check that's not the case here. ~~~~
You're probably right, it's continually sending me to the host admin panel. Should I rename the directory or is there any way around this?

No, it's saying that it doesn't appear to be executing under a PHP 5.x environment, which might well be the case if the hosting provider provides PHP 5.x as a CGI, as is common.
The advice at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Robchurch/Getting_PHP_5_on_a_cheap_host might be helpful here.
