Dear All, I am looking for some advice and guidance please. I currently have 1 instance of MediaWiki running on the server in question. I want to add another Wiki, also running from the same server. The second Wiki in question, will house another project we are working on, and I envisage information to be transcluded between the two sites. What is best practice for having multiple Wiki's running on one server? Do I download MediWiki and install again? Or can I use the existing files but create a (new) separate Wiki. Maybe another question to think about, but how would I then distinguish between the 2 separate sites in IE? Thanks for you help in advance. David For Austin-Smith:Lord LLP

I've done this recently, although I'm not sure about transclusion between the sites - I haven't tried that.
I simpy installed the software in two paths (e.g. htdocs/wiki1 and htdocs/wiki2). You then navigate to each copy of the configuration script and define the appropriate values for each instance - you'll certainly want different table prefixes.

I also install Mediawiki in separate paths but use separate databases so no need for prefixes. I prefer this since I can backup and restore the databases separately, making each wiki independent of the other should something like corruption happen.

I use one database and backup and restore the two differently prefixed sets of database tables separately. They are in separate catalogues and MySQL has no problem with this.

Hello David,
I have multiple wikis running on the same web server. Here is what I have done (maybe not the best way, but it work easily).
Here is the content of my htdocs directory : Htdocs\wiki1 Htdocs\wiki2 Htdocs\wiki3 Htdocs\wiki4 Htdocs\wiki5 Htdocs\index.html
In the index.html (kind of Web Portal), I have 5 links, one for each wiki...
SO I give to all my users the link to the Web Portal (index.html) and from there they go to the wiki they want.
Good luck !
Pierre

Look at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Wiki_family. This will give you several options.
Personally, I prefer multiple wikis with each having its own prefix. I also created a "pool" or common wiki to share images and files between the other wikis.
I've used symbolic links to avoid having multiple copies of the MW code.
Consider using shared tables for things like the user tables if it is reasonable to assume that those who register with one wiki are likely to register with the other.
