I had sent the following message to the list a few days back. Yet to receive any help as yet. Please have a look and let me know if any suggestion is available. I need a solution very urgently. Thanks. ========================================================================
Dear list,
I am a newbie to MediaWiki. I am facing some problem with the math environment in version 1.9.3. I am not sure if it is a Texvc problem.
Even if I put simplest math expression like: <math>n=0</math>, the output shows "*Failed to parse (Can't write to or create math temp directory): n=0"
I have checked thoroughly that apache has permission to write at required places. Even I have tried 'chmod -R 777 wiki/' to give write permission everywhere !
Any help/suggestion will be highly appreciated.
Regards, Suman.

I am coming back with this problem again ! texvc works fine in command line for me. e.g. when I am at 'images' folder in my wiki-home, and issue the command '../math/texvc ./tmp/ ./math/ "y=x+2" iso-8859-1', the correct png file is getting generated in the ./math/ folder. But, in the wiki, any content inside the math tags, show:
*Failed to parse (Can't write to or create math temp directory): n=0*
Both math and tmp folders have world write permissions.
Any help, please !
Thanks, Suman.

two hints:
1.) do you use $wgUploadDirectory in your LocalSettings and set it to another dir than the expected ~/wiki/images ?
2.) do you use the apache-user in command line? different users, different permissions! perhaps your command-line-user has write-perms while apache-user not. try 'chmod -R 777 images images/math images/tmp'. if this works, reduce permissions or ownerships to what you raelly need.
after all a had a also a problem with the standard-pathes to latex's dvipng (i dont use imagemagic), but that's another story ...

Still it does not work. I have default value set to $wgUploadDirectory. I told previously that assigning world (777) write permission to the 'images' folder and subfolders does not work either.
It seems to be common problem. Many Google search results with the string "Failed to parse (Can't write to or create math temp directory):" leads to pages, where they are showing the same string as error only ! I guess it requires further attention.
