I mean to display a gallery of images I have uploaded, either on my User:page, or on a subpage of that.

I want to be able to upload a picture and tag it with [[User:Myname]] and have that image automatically show up on my User page. I was thinking this could be done in a similar way to the Category: image tags.
Any ideas how this could be done?
Why wouldn't categories work? Or do you mean to list pictures you've uploaded?

Well, only categories have the magic property of being generated from a "what links here" list; other pages have to be changed to add content to them. So there's nothing you can do to an image which will make it appear on anything other than a category. Instead, you'll just have to add an image gallery to your userpage (or wherever) and update it yourself - you might want to use the special <gallery> tags: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Gallery
