Is there a tarball somewhere of the Help namespace available here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents
Our local network gets pretty slow during the day, and I'd like to pre-load our Help: namespace with this tree.
Thanks,
Randall

At this time we do not have a redistributable set of help pages with free, non-viral license terms.

Ok. Is there any free documentation on Mediawiki formatting that users can put in their wikis?
Thanks,
Randall
This is something I would like to address, actually. I'd be quite happy to sort out some help namespace content for redistribution, but what sort of license would we be after? GFDL? GPL? Public Domain?

Thanks! Re the license, it'd be helpful if admins could just dump the pages in as a starter Help: template, and then augment/trim as desired (for unpopulated templates, etc.) without requiring a public release of the changes.

Could you elaborate? The help pages have quality issues, but I wasn't aware of any licensing issues. While they are GFDL, this should not be an issue, as importing the help into a wiki would constitute "mere aggregation" with other pages in the wiki, which does not invoke the "viral" clause of the GFDL.

Surely we could release it as part of the documentation of the software itself, and thus under the GNU General Public License; or am I missing something?
Regardless, our end-user documentation stinks. Let's get it sorted.

While the license gets sorted, I'd like to help move things forward on assembling the content. Mainly because I'm building the Help: pages for my site now. ;>) How can I help?
