I want to be able to control the "default broken link" without altering the underlying wikitext. (Ideally I would like to do this on an article-by-article basis, but on a site-wide basis would be a good start.) This is intended to allow re-use or mirroring of article content across multiple wikis.

If you already know all this and have good reasons for a global switch on broken links then continue your quest in peace!
