I can send an email using a php script evoked through the browser. It is a simple script like this that arrives correctly.

Unless you have set $wgSMTP in your LocalSettings, MediaWiki will also use the php mail() function, so it's odd that it doesn't arrive when done from the wiki.

You are right in that the implementation is in UserMailer.php You could log the parameters used just before the mail() call and then try with those parameters in your sample script.
