Hello to all...
I am tring to set up the WIKI engine on my server to open a major free service to the Portuguese University Community but My server is currently running PHP 4.4.6 and they are not wiling to upgrade as they say PHP 5.1 is not secure and ready for production (the e-mail they send me after 2 days of talks is in the end)
Is there any version of Wiki that runs on that version? or is there any way to put the current Wiki version runing on that version?
Thank you
Edu

This PHP version is more secure than you or your client will ever know. It's the latest 4.4.x version, with mod_security rules, adding an extra layer of protection, personally coded by me. This PHP version is secure.
Are you really trying to tell me they cant find a secure version that runs on 4.4.6? Not true.
What do you suggest, we upgrade PHP on the entire server and have a few hundred websites down because you want a certain version of PHP? Not going to happen, we cant just upgrade PHP server wide, while it's not stable enough / backwards compliant enough for CPanel servers.
So once again, find another version of the software, after testing PHP 5.x.x, it's not ready for the production servers yet.
Mediawiki 1.6.10 is the latest version running on php 4 but I believe the 1.6 support/maintenance will stop soon

Does any one knows if this issue with the 4.4.6 is really serious with wiki????
Because if I edit the code and remove the securrity check it will setup I just doesn't know if it will be safe to run

It's possible to run several php versions on the same server. Either with .php5 or configuring via a .htaccess, so there's no need "to upgrade PHP on the entire server" I wonder about the code quality, if a version upgrade breaks "a few hundred websites"...
LoL
I am wondering as well... that is why I am goingot o start looking for an alternative Provider... but will be hard to find one that gives me what I need for only (150/year)

The last version of MediaWiki that supports PHP 4.x is 1.6.10. Support for the 1.6.x branch is scheduled to end when MediaWiki 1.10 is released, although it might be supported on an unofficial basis for a bit longer; see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Version_lifecycle. Note that it isn't possible to run MediaWiki 1.7.0 and upwards on PHP 4.x as features of PHP 5.x are required.
I would strongly recommend looking for a provider who [a] doesn't actually present a load of bull shit as an excuse for not wanting to damage compatibility with their other clients and [b] gives the option to use PHP 5, even if it means some .htaccess hacking, etc.

mod_security rules that are probably very jumpy, meaning your wiki would have problems saving pages with "dangerous" titles or content.
Are you really trying to tell me they cant find a secure version that runs on 4.4.6? Not true.
"Secure version?" No, we just stopped supporting an ancient version of PHP and started using some of the better features provided in the newer versions to allow us to write better code.

Maybe dropping PHP 4 support will actually get many hosts to upgrade since many people use MediaWiki.
