I have been reading about integration of MW with some PHP discussion forum software;

However, the trail seems to have gone cold... Other than the "Extension:DiscussionThread Article" and the "Extension:DiscussionThreading" extension, are there any plans to make the discussion pages better (more like a threaded discussion forum)?
Having seen 10's of instances of PHPBB deployed all over the net, it seems logical that MW should go in a similar direction too (if only for discussion pages).

Well, there's the LiquidThreads project: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:LiquidThreads However, that page doesn't contain any info on the current status - but I think it's still actively in development. Not sure about an ETA though; Rob or Brion probably know more about that.

It's under active development with funding from COL.org and Wikia.com. There's a demo at

(try any talk page). There's still lots of work to do but we're making good progress & keeping up with SVN trunk.

Tim mentioned that, following his file storage rewrite work, InstantCommons would be "quite trivial to do" - since then, I noticed the developer who's purported to be working on it commit a few files to his branch in Subversion, but nothing else.

From what I can gather, Paa Kwesi (the dev) has ported the client-side
functionality over to Tim's new file repository code, but the API methods that are needed on the server-side are still in a separate branch. I've contacted him to ask what exactly is left to be done.

That is very nice, but it's clearly an attempt to crunje MW into something resembling a discussion forum. Given that the concept, requirements and implementation of discussion forums are essentially solved problems, why is it necessary to attempt to re-develop them all? I can see that there are a lot of advantages to this project, and not least it looks like fun. But, when it comes to discussions, existing discussion forum tools are already more or less perfect.

My idea is to have MW for articles, and flip to an instance of something like PHPBB for the discussion tab, Allowing users to start new threads, comment on existing threads, etc. etc. Some discussion of this kind of integration was going on on the punBB forums. I wonder if anything similar is being suggested elsewhere?

The underlying philosophy requires it. The assumption here is not that traditional forums are "more or less perfect", but that they suck in many different ways, and that a solution combining the merits of traditional forums & wikis is needed. LQT is different from forums in a few ways: - threads have to be wiki-summarized to be archived - threads are attached to wiki pages (which are shown as headers) - every comment is a regular wiki page - the thread as a whole has a history so that you can see what changes were made over time (comments added, deleted, moved, edited, etc.) - integrates with standard wiki features (wiki syntax, custom signatures, etc.)
Most importantly it's designed to transition existing article-focused discussions in a wiki to a threaded system, which would be much harder if you just roped phpBB into a wiki. I.e. we want a system that can be realistically deployed on Wikipedia talk pages.

Hi everybody,
I need some advices about using mediawiki format in my site.
I'm trying to personalize a CMS named Pligg to be used in my University, and I need that the posts accept MediaWiki format referencing the MediaWiki I have installed in my site, I have them in this way:

So, I don't know to much php, so your advices could be great :)

Every single comment. It makes me cringe too, since the naming is very ad hoc. Something involving subpages would help, I would think (assuming a comment cannot be moved between threads or part of multiple threads, they can all the subpages of the comment they are a reply to, so you only have a top-level page for original posts, so one page per thread).

The naming is irrelevant as long as we properly retain the association with threads & talk pages. This should already be the case, but the UI is currently confusing when you land on a single-comment page or thread; that's a known issue.

At the moment the talk pages have what look at first glance to be random numbers in grey after the names of the threads (these numbers are, in fact, the number that is appended to the name of the thread to make it unique). That's going to confuse people. Another thing which will confuse people is that if you make a thread with the subject "Foo 1", and there are no other threads called "Foo 1" you would expect the page to be "Thread:Foo_1", however if there is a thread called "Foo" with a reply, or two threads called "Foo", then actually you'll end up with "Thread:Foo_1_1". Using wiki pages for comments suggests that they are intended to be human-usable, but the current naming system means they are not. You either need a naming system that makes complete sense (eg. subpages), or one that makes no sense (eg. autoincrementing id numbers). One that makes some sense but not much is just going to cause confusion.
