I need a way of having all anonymous users, and only anonymous users, be members of a uniquely identified group. In mediawiki currently, anonymous users are part of the * group whilst there are other specific groups for sysops, autoconfirmed users etc. Does anyone know of a way to create such a group for only anonymous users?

I don't believe this is possible to do with a group, but starting in 1.16 you can do it with individual rights.
Something like: $wgGroupPermissions['*']['anonuser'] = true; $wgRevokePermissions['user']['anonuser'] = true; would give only anonymous users the 'anonuser' right
however $wgRevokePermissions is a new feature and only available in 1.16 and SVN trunk.
