Nice idea... tried running the following simple code...
http://the-good-food-guide.com/test1.php . And tested the time taken to
return a results, less than 5 seconds !!! so I guess its' probably the
time spent on the DB. I know this is a long shot but any chance I can
improve the speed of access???

You should turn on page caching this is available in localsettings.php,
this can help a lot.
Also you should try running a couple of non database driven php pages to
see what is causing the slowdown.

Have you tried removing the Google map, these can take a long time to
load especially if it is drawing data from else ware.
