There was some chatter in recent weeks about most efficient methods on how to upgrade an existing (older version) install of MediaWiki.
Was there ever a consensus on the easiest method for non-programmers?
Or should I be knocking on another list for this info (and if so, which list?)
Thanks for your time.
Nobody implemented an automated updater so far, as far as I know, if that's what you're asking.
The standard method of updating your MediaWiki installation is still to make a backup, then remove all MediaWiki files other than LocalSettings.php and images/ and cache/ directories, upload in their place all the files for the new version of MediaWiki and the extensions and skins you use, then run the update.php maintenance script or the web updater.

Yes, but with older versions you may get server problems. Meaning newer version (MW and extensions) may need newer DB, PHP and so on. So sometimes this will not work.
Similar if you just try to copy an installation from an old server to a new one without updating the MW. Things like this gave me often occasion to cuss in the past. And I'm extension developer....
Greetings and happy new year. Frank

I suppose that's true (and the Upgrading guide I linked warns about it at the very beginning), but it doesn't seem very relevant here :) An automated updater wouldn't help with it. It sounds like you want somebody to just manage your whole server; unfortunately people tend to charge money for that ;)
There are several free hosting services for MediaWiki (Wikia being the best-known one, but also ShoutWiki and a few others: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Hosting_services), but they generally don't give you the kind of flexibility you probably want if you choose to run MediaWiki yourself.

Interesting: I always delete the /cache/ directory.

Well, it *is* cache, it probably can be deleted. But I mentioned both directories that can contain anything that is not MediaWiki source code, just in case :)
Yes, of course. But I think my point is that you quoted a source and then deviated from the instructions in the source!

Happy new year to all.
There are features like mw-config and Composer but they are far from ideal. mw-config doesn't seem to handle extensions and Composer requires command-line access, which is not available to many of us. And it is not straightforward in its use. Lots of work to do.
Regards,
Francis

Hi mw-config does handle extensions. Its weather the extension chooses not to support it. mw-config is to be used if you doint have access to running the update.php script.

I have seen some comments about updating, indeed. If there would be consensus, then it must be about the fact that the update process should become easier and more efficient. How and when this will be realised, is not clear to me.
