I'm considering FCKeditor+MediaWiki (http://mediawiki.fckeditor.net/) as a WYSIWYG editor for our wiki. Is anyone out there using this in a "serious" environment? Is the current "proof of concept" implementation reliable? Is it ever destructive (i.e., incorrect edits, broken saves)?
I know there are some small bugs (e.g., double-click a word to highlight it, click Italics, and you get ''foobar<space> '' instead of ''foobar''). Any more significant issues?
Or does it work great for you?
Thanks, DanB
Answering my own question: I found one destructive bug in the current "proof of concept" implementation. If FCKeditor encounters an unknown tag <foobar> in an edited page, and you save the article, the tag gets saved as <foobar>, making it not a tag anymore.

I once worked at a company whose wikis used a WYSIWYG editor (can't remember if it was FCKeditor or TinyMCE).
The one thing that /really/ irked me was Template development. Those editors have a tendency to add and manipulate whitespace in places you may not intend, the result being broken bulleted lists, uninterpreted template parameters, odd tables, etc.
I haven't looked into these editors recently, but I'd recommend making sure there's a way to turn them off either by user preference, interface toggle option, or on a per-Namespace basis.

MediaWiki+FCKeditor provides all three of these methods for disabling the WYSIWYG editor: by namespace, by user, and totally.

We use FCKeditor in the 40 wikis (v1.12.0) that we maintain. A few people run into some bugs/issues but even those people like it much better than wikitext. It use to have many bugs (like your foobar example) but for the current implementation (which for Mediawiki v1.12.0 and earlier requires modifying Sanitizer.php and EditPage.php), I found those bugs to have gone away.
The biggest issue I have found is the lack of documentation. There is documentation for FCKeditor, but not the FCKeditor+Mediaiwki (if I'm wrong please let me know!). I found that for it to be completely functional you need to add the Cite, Calendar, and Inputbox extensions and maybe others. There is an "anchor" button in the menu which seems to be completely worthless. I found a lot of information on the FCKeditor's discussion (talk) page: (http://mediawiki.fckeditor.net/index.php/Talk:Main_Page).
But, as I said, compared to using wikitext our users seem to enjoy the FCKeditor since I have offered to remove it from any of the 40 wikis we support and none have asked that it be removed.

We're using it on our wiki and it works well. There are a few bugs, but you can disable it in Preferences > Misc. The ajax features are sublime.

I've been reluctant to use it, for reasons similar to what others have described. But I know that the MOD_ENCODE project is working on a version where instead of being the default, there are just tabs in the edit view for wikitext vs FCK. I know you can toggle in FCK, but what they showed at a workshop I attended looked nice, since users didn't default to FCK unless they specified it.
