-----Original Message----- From: mediawiki-l-bounces@Wikimedia.org [mailto:mediawiki-l-bounces@Wikimedia.org] On Behalf Of Tim Doyle Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2006 12:51 PM To: 'MediaWiki announcements and site admin list' Subject: [Mediawiki-l] Problems upgrading
I am attempting to upgrade from v1.5.4 to 1.6.8.
I have PHP 5.1.2 (apache2handler) and MySQL 4.0.18.
I followed the instructions at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading_to_1.6 and
- Backed everything up
- Unpacked the new files into the existing directory
- Attempted to run the update script, at which point I received an error:
"Specified key was too long. Max key length is 500 (localhost)"
I notice that Terry Poperszky posted this same issue to this list 4/28/06 with no reply. Same with Thomas Klein on 1/24/06.
I found that Brion answered this on http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help_talk:Running_MediaWiki_on_Windows#Specif ied_key_was_too_long.3B back late last year with the following suggestion:
- Run MySQL 4.0, or set default MySQL charset to latin1 instead of utf-8,
or install 1.5beta. --brion 08:20, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Another option is to alter the database you want to use to use the
latin1 default charset: ALTER DATABASE db_name DEFAULT CHARACTER SET latin1;
Since I am already running MySQL 4.0, so that solution won't work.
Should I attempt to alter the database to use latin1? If so, where and how do I make that change? Will that affect just that database, or any others? Will that change affect only the database that the update script is attempting to create, or will it affect the existing one?
Thank you, and sorry for the novice questions,
Tim Doyle

I've written an extension that might be useful for someone as it is for me.
It provides flexible access management for custom namespaces by using separate permissions for each action (read,edit,create,move) on articles in each custom namespace.
See details on http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/NamespacePermissions_Extension
Comments and suggestions are very welcome.

after upgrading to 1.6.5 I noticed that my dutch links to ISBN resources no longer exist on special:Booksources. I must have edited Language.php in the past. According to http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:ISBN the links in language.php are just a fallback option if special:Booksources does not exist.
Now, when i alter special:Booksources to include alternate links, the page does not handle the MAGICNUMBER string. Links to additional resources do show up, but the word MAGICNUMBER has not been replaced by the given ISBN number.
any solutions? I would prefer a solution that would still work after updateing the software.
thanks in advance

What do you mean by that? Do you mean you personally took part of our code, made a PEAR package out of it, and included a second copy on your system in the wrong place?
Or something else?

THIS IS THE PHP.INI : http://sciencemoleculaire.studentblog.org/php.ini
Bonjour Jacqueline,
The problem comes from UtfNormalUtil.php :) It exists both as a PEAR package and as MediaWiki file but the PEAR path (/usr/share/pear/) is most probably before our paths.
The easiest way is probably to add /usr/share/pear/ to the open_basedir restriction. I am not sure why it is used though, as we are supposed to override the include path in localsettings.php:
if( defined( 'MW_INSTALL_PATH' ) ) { $IP = MW_INSTALL_PATH; } else { $IP = dirname( __FILE__ ); }
$path = array( $IP, "$IP/includes", "$IP/languages" ); set_include_path( implode( PATH_SEPARATOR, $path ) );

Nein, es gibt leider keine M?glichkeit ohne einen kundenspezifische Extension. Anderen raten k?nnen, wie man solch einen Extension programmieren kann.
[No, unforutunately MediaWiki doesn't have this capability without a custom-built extension. Others can advice how to program such an extension.]

are you sure it is the right php.ini ? there isn't any open_basedir restriction in your configuration.
; open_basedir, if set, limits all file operations to the defined directory ; and below. This directive makes most sense if used in a per-directory ; or per-virtualhost web server configuration file. ; ;open_basedir =
Please. Can you explain better ? What type of setting i need to use in php.to disable the "open base dir restriction" error ?
With MW 1,7.1. I have put now in php.ini the setting :
include_path = ".:/usr/share/pear" include_path = ".:.:"
But the problem is not corrected. Have you a different setting for php.ini ?

That is a lovely page that is clear and helpful with good links to alternatives. If I were interested in such restrictions (and I'm not), I'd definitely give that a serious look. Thanks for that--documentation is too often neglected.

Hi all
I am running a mediaWIKI multilingual setup and have some problems with renaming some action tabs of MediaWIKI.
If I change the entry for 'nstab-main' in languages/Messages.php (which seems to be the default file for english) to another value, this changed value should be in the action tab instead of "Article" - but it is not visible. Also if I change it in the other language files e.g. languages/MessagesDe.php for german, there is no change. I also tried to purge the pages and clear the page cache, but without success.
So my question is: Are these messages cached somewhere else?
Thanks for any hints in advance.

1. Doesn't seem to be a wikimedia install. 2. Wikimedia has no control over who uses there software or how (other than through license enforcement, but this doesn't look like an obvious violation). 3. You really need to take this up with thje organization that handles internet names internic.net (I forget for sure).
Every company I do a "whois" with lists: No match for "BRAHMAKUMARIS.INFO".
Perhaps they are using a rouge DNS. Good luck, but this isn't really the proper forum.
