I've struck out with even a guess where to start here.

No browser (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, IE) on any of 3 machines at this location can remain logged in. Move away from the page on which the login was performed, and you're logged out.
However, others not at this location are able to retain logins.
I shudder to think that it's a HughesNet issue (the very best of clueless Indian support), but that's the only thing that's unique to us and common to the 3 machines here.
The HughesNet rig is an HN7000S into a NetGear Ethernet Switch.
I have no clue about where to start troubleshooting.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Well it works for me here, so I'd guess it is your local setup. Check you have cookies enabled on your browsers would be the first step.

Mark

Hello Mark,
Yes--we have absolutely no problems with other session-based apps. Note that it's ALL browsers on ALL machines!
I've looked at the cookies here and compared to the session ID stored by MediaWiki--they agree. I've get an identical installation locally that allows me to see what session data looks like in a working installation (absolutely no problems with the local install, so whatever support MediaWiki needs from browsers is obviously in place).

This is something that a sysadmin could enforce on machines so doesnt really mean anything.

Well as the wiki works for me and it looks at least one other person it would seem that the issue is with your end, ie your machines and their setup. This isnt really suitable for this list, maybe try that tech support?

Hello Mark,
Thanks. I built and run the local network; all machines successfully run the local MediaWiki install. So, there's no other "tech support" here.
I'll scrounge around the HughesNet streets to see if I can get any further ideas.

How is the session name created? It doesn't seem like the standard generator.
hello all i have installed mediawiki from apt-get install mediawiki mediawiki-math mediawiki-extensions and configured on debian box and dumped eswiki-20090601-pages-articles.xml.bz2 with mwdumped.jar to database all work fine, i looked some articles math formulas see ok. but when run rebuild.php script all i see the same article in header. i delete my database and installed mediawiki manually downloading .tar.gz and the same problem continue
Hello Mark,
Just to close this out in a clean fashion, see http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/wiki/mediawiki/153250
Now to see if I can find help at HughesNet.
Once one has been shown the problem, the solution is often simple: http://www.justbroadband.org/faq/13533
Thanks to all who thought about this problem.
Mark, by chance, did you select "Remember my login on this computer" when logging in, and Curt, did you not?
