Hello,
My wiki installation is managed like the following:
*www.domain1.com* -> gets redirected to: *www.domain1.com/wiki/Hauptseite*
Now I would like to add another domain* www.domain2.com*. This Domain gets directed to *www.domain1.com/wiki/Hauptseite*
(that is not the problem and can be done in ease)
*So here is my question:*
is it possible to redirect *www.domain2.com* to the same wiki installation under *www.domain1.com/wiki/Hauptseite* but that the browser window shows up *www.domain2.com/wiki/Hauptseite* ?
Your Help is highly appreciated

Do you want to have http://domain2/wiki/... to redirect to http://domain1/wiki/..., or simply have both domains access the same directory path on your host while retaining the different domain names?
The former is easily done with .htaccess (if you use Apache), and the latter is as simple as setting up domain2 with your host in the same way as domain1 (that is, point it to the same directory on your host filesystem).
*or simply have both domains access the same directory path on your host while retaining the different domain names? * yes, thats exactly what i would like to have. Im sorry that I did not express it so clear caused by my lag of english language
What exactly do i need to write into the htaccess ?

I would suggest just setting up the second domain to point to the same directory space as the first domain. Your hosting or DNS company should be able to help you with that.
yes and then it will be redirected to domain1
So here is my configuration: domain1 and domain2 point to the same wiki installation in one and the same folder on my webhost.
when i browse domain2, domain1 is standing in the browser,
if someone browses domain2, i would like to see it in the browser.

Lots of confusion here, let me try to clear it up:
http://www.domain1.com/wiki/ serves /var/www/html/w and the wiki mysql db with no prefix http://www.domain2.com/wiki/ serves /var/www/html/w and the wiki mysql db with no prefix
They are both the exact same wiki, with the exact same articles, users, database, tables, data, and the exact same php files.
If I have this right, all Isabell wants is have two domain names serve the same wiki. Isabell does not want to use a redirect, if someone goes to domain2, all their urls should stay domain2. ditto for domain1.

So just put a VirtualHost directive into apache httpd.conf on the domain1 server and point the logical name for domain2 to the IP of domain1.

maybe a proposal to a forthcoming extension or feature in future mediawiki versions :)

MediaWiki is already perfectly capable of being run from multiple domains. Just install it and don't set a specific $wgServer. The rest is just config of your webserver or shared host, which is out of the scope of any web application.
It's already possible and there's nothing MediaWiki needs to fix. Last I checked it's worse with WordPress because there are cases where WordPress will insert the domain name into stuff that goes into the database and you end up with that hardcoded in your content.

That's right. You shouldn't set it to anything. The code in DefaultSettings (WebRequest::detectServer() in 1.18) will set it to the appropiate domain the users were coming to. I wonder if perhaps $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] is set to domain1 even when accessing through domain2. I never had problems with $wgServer being autodetected.

How the shared host was setup to point two domains at the site wasn't even mentioned iirc.
Frankly it's even possible that the host themselves is actually taking whatever 'extra domain' you give them and doing a dumb 301 or frame redirect instead of just doing what a ServerAlias would do.
Btw, we use HTTP_HOST first not SERVER_NAME.

That's true for 1.18 but not for 1.17 http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/branches/REL1_17/phase3/includes/D...
Prefering SERVER_NAME to HTTP_HOST seems the sensible thing to do, as then if you have "UseCanonicalName On" you always get the right server name, even in the case of malicious user requests.
The order of WebRequest::detectServer() seems to have been copied from Installer::envRequestServer() both edits by Tim (r90105, r90194).
Tim, was there any reason to have HTTP_HOST in preference to SERVER_NAME?
I see there could be problems with a truncated SERVER_NAME variable with lighttpd (r83847) but that seems taken care by the function already.
Hehe, me as a beginner dont understand anything anymore.
Maybe someone wants to put a line under all this and tell if it is definately possible or not.
If so, what do i have to change in which file etc. if i use MW on a shared webhosting?
ty all :)

Yes, we diverged the topic a bit. But it is a good think you brought this up. :)
The fact is, if you haven't set $wgServer to anything in LocalSettings.php, it should just work. There may be something in your configuration which makes it fail. Can you provide the actual values of domain1 and domain2 so we can take a look? (send them privately if you prefer)
Same thing except there are VirtualHost directives for both domains - that's how your shared hosting works in the first place. No? B.

So just put a VirtualHost directive into apache httpd.conf on the domain1 server and point the logical name for domain2 to the IP of domain1.

http://www.domain1.com/wiki/ serves /var/www/html/w and the wiki mysql db with no prefix http://www.domain2.com/wiki/ serves /var/www/html/w and the wiki mysql db with no prefix
They are both the exact same wiki, with the exact same articles, users, database, tables, data, and the exact same php files.
If I have this right, all Isabell wants is have two domain names serve the same wiki. Isabell does not want to use a redirect, if someone goes to domain2, all their urls should stay domain2. ditto for domain1.

yes and then it will be redirected to domain1
So here is my configuration: domain1 and domain2 point to the same wiki installation in one and the same folder on my webhost.
when i browse domain2, domain1 is standing in the browser,
if someone browses domain2, i would like to see it in the browser.

I would suggest just setting up the second domain to point to the same directory space as the first domain. Your hosting or DNS company
should
be able to help you with that.

It may be possible, but I reckon you will need to take care of the $wgServer variable in your LocalSettings.php. Maybe it works if you insert some PHP code there that sets $wgServer depending on the request URL.

---------------------------------------- assuming Oliver is correct in his well laid out diagram: This issus is not specific to Mediawiki, but rather a problem to be solved by setting up the correct virtual hosting system "If you host your own website on your own equipment or have 'shell' access to your shared host". If as indicated your being hosted on a shared hosting service then the admins of the shared hosting service will need to set up a second virtual host account with the domain name of the second required domain and point it to the same web location as the primary domain. If you are not able to do either of these, there is a third alternative: us a service (example; http://freedns.afraid.org or http://www.dyndns.com ) to do simple web forwarding with a cloaked domain name. I do that myself on several sites that I manage. then when someone types in the domain2 name they see domain1 name in their browser location bar. Good Luck! frosty
