Is anybody else getting tons of user registrations that have spam in the user pages and the usernames are soemthing like "180 buy Viagra"?
I haven't had a chance to test it but doesn't the keyword blacklist block the usage of those words in usernames and userpages?
Also is there a better captcha available.. this bot is getting around the math question

Not unless you've installed and configured it. On Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 4:53 PM, 2007@gmaskfx.com 2007@gmaskfx.com wrote:

Yes: read the rest of the ConfirmEdit extension page.
2007@gmaskfx.com wrote:

I use the FancyCaptcha that comes with ConfirmEdit. It needs some setup procedure that can be a little intimidating. The good thing is that it is hard enough to keep all bots away (not a single spam in two years of use). The bad thing is that it is hard enough to keep half of casual anonymous visitors from making edits.
There is one usability issue: If the wiki is set to always require confirmation, it is still only show the captcha after the first save try. The captcha should be shown right in the edit page before saving if it is necessary anyways, thus avoiding an additional step in order to save the page.

It's installed and works for regular pages.. does it not work for userpages and usernames by default?
I haven't used Title Blacklist much, but from looking at the documentation, it seems like you may need to edit MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-forbidden-new-account.

Seems reasonable: filed as bug 19648 < https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19648%3E.

Yeah, sucks.
Hi,
we have exactly the same issue and I am trying to fight it with the TitleBlacklist Extension right now: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Title_Blacklist
My Regexp entry is: \d*\sbuy\s.* <newaccountonly>
Not sure if it works, though. Gotta wait.

Well, It has only been one day, but I have ZERO new spam users or edits. I installed the SpamBlacklist and Title_Blacklist at the same time so I am not sure which one is getting them, but it seems to be working. On my site www.debatrix.org .After installing I tested it myself with a couple of "fake spam" edits and users and it caught me every time, with a nice little message letting me know what I was doing was spam.

1. Try pulling the Blacklist from Mediawiki or wikipedia using their URLs like below. 2. Instead of adding blacklist items to 'Project:Title blacklist' add them to the special page 'Mediawiki:TitleBlacklist' (I am not sure if this will help because I have added nothing to this page yet at my site.

You do not necessarily need to configure the $wgTitleBlacklistSources. It suffices to put the require_once statement in your LocalSettings.php and then edit MediaWiki:Titleblacklist
Yet, I can still add account called "Buy Viagra" or whatever.
The Regexp entry above I provided does not match "Buy Viagra". It only matches the specific spam accounts (e.g. "123 buy anything") with the following rule
any number of digets + a white space character + the string "buy" + a white space character + any number of arbitrary characters

Is anybody else getting tons of user registrations that have spam in the user pages and the usernames are soemthing like "180 buy Viagra"?
It's very common. One solution is http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RegexBlock I expect TitleBlacklist would also help. FancyCaptchas do not help - they're solving these too.

You mean a bot is able to bypass your FancyCaptchas?. I find that hard to believe. Isn't this algorithm random?.

Yes, or a human is doing them. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA#Circumvention
I've seen these "180 buy Viagra"-type accounts on wikis with math captchas, fancy captchas, and re-captcha. And of course on wikis that aren't using the ConfirmEdit extension.

I threw together a little plugin for ConfirmEdit that uses questions instead of word-image CAPTCHAs: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:QuestyCaptcha
Humans can still solve them, of course, but a person working in an Indian CAPTCHA-cracking farm might have more trouble answering a question specific to your site than just reading a word in an image. If you try it out, let me know how well it works. :)
