I am running MediaWiki 1.5.1 on www.drumcorpswiki.com and over the last two weeks or so, I've begun having major spam problems. It seems someone (a bot possibly?) is creating a user account and then editing many pages to include spam link and/or a hidden div section. Each time, I have to block the user and rollback all of the changes. Has there been a fix to the problem? Please see the recent changes on the site to get an idea of what I've been up against.
Thanks for any assistance anyone may provide,
Harlan Landes
This isn't the kind of problem that can be fixed, its one of those things you have to just deal with.
There are a couple of things you can try, for example if the bot is making lots of accounts you can impose account creation limits, there is also a hack to add a captchas.
Also as you are running version 1.5 there are some additional tools available (you should upgrade to version 1.5.2)

If you add:
$wgSpamRegex="/overflow:auto/";
to LocalSettings.php the spam will stop.
Unfortunately rolling back the changes has to be done page by page.
You might just leave it - there isn't anything "evil" about the code it inserts - but it might be used in a second, more serious attack.

$wgSpamRegex="/overflow:auto/";

I suggest to install the SpamBlacklist Extension, together with the regexp mentioned by Paul or
$wgSpamRegex="/<div/";
if div is an element that your users would not enter.
I have lots of spambots attacks each day, but none get through :-)

I can only verify that this spammer is hitting a variety of wikis. He's hit FIRSTwiki as well. I should note that I do not run that one, just help sysop. I did notice that his attack is consistant. The exact same text added to the end of every edit link it could lay its hands on.
