I can't really understand when, but in some circomstances around fisrt editing of a page, when one clic on "save", the action is "preview".
the page is not actually saved, but previewed and if one don't notice it and quit, the page is lost.
I'm sure it's not a clic on the bad button, but can't be sure of the version of the wiki it comes, because I use several mediawikis and don't remember what did the thing.
I can't do this at will. is this a known thing? is it a bug (if so I will investigate more)
thanks jdd

I don't seem to have this problem with my installation of MediaWiki 1.5.1 (http://wikiomics.org). If you want to know the version of the software running the mediawiki, go to "Special pages" and then to "Version" or directly to [[Special:Version]].

yes, this I know, but I use 4-5 different mediawikis on different platforms (mostly not owned by me) and of different version. I don't remember which have the problem. seems to me it's on wikipedia (pretty sure), so probably 1.6... but I have had this many times for a long period.
at first I lost pages. wonder why. I use to save frequently. finally noticed that I was from time to time on preview and not on save.
now than I know it I do with care, but O don't know how to reproduce the problem, so it's hard to fix.

That's weird, it doesn't even have email notifications (or they are well-hidden). I am wondering which version of MediaWiki is actually in use in Wikipedia, and how the transfer from one version to another is performed. Since the database structure changed between 1.4 and 1.5, how do people handle upgrades of MediaWiki at Wikipedia? Is there really an upgrade or just a carefully patched version which remains compatible with older versions of MediaWiki?
Thanks for any insights into this,
Martin

Wikimedia projects use a version of 1.6-dev which is usually slightly behind CVS HEAD. When upgrading, a developer with appropriate access permissions will synchronise the Wikimedia server installation with CVS HEAD using a number of scripts designed for the purpose; the Wikimedia implementation of the MediaWiki software is a little more intricate than most others'.

I have just started to use a wiki in my teaching and I am AMAZED by the amount of work that people are churning out and the way people are assisting each other in their work.
Does anyone know of tools to summarise the logs e.g. * produce graphs of the number of edits per hour * number of people reading each page * number of people editing each page
Can I export the HISTORY of a page or RECENT CHANGES in a comma delimited file?
There are lots of potential research papers in looking at how wikis are used and I would be grate full of any pointers that people could give me.

You might take a look at Erik Zachte's stats stuff; I believe his scripts are available: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikistats
(Note that individual page views are not recorded by the wiki, you'd need to dig into web server logs to get that information. Though the page hit counters, if enabled, might do depending on what you need.)

You can extract data directly from the database using the various mysql tools, or write a little php or perl script.
Also you could work from the XML data dumps, which you can produce in bulk from dumpBackup.php.

It's a known bug which will sporadically affect the software, seemingly regardless of version. If you don't get it, you're lucky.
