Dear all
I just successfully installed MediaWiki on my server; there were no information that the installation was not correct. However, unfortunately, when going to the page /index.php I see the content of the file LocalSettings.php :-( What went wrong? Any help on this is appreciated.
Regards, Albert

I have found many questions but not an answer that makes sense to me yet concerning how to edit the "toolbox" navigation sidebar. I have found information to successfully edit the MediaWiki:Sidebar but nothing else.
Is it as simple as editing MediaWiki:Sidebar? What is the page name to edit or is it more complicated?
This has been frustrating to say the least so anyone who might enlighten me I would be grateful.
Other than that I really like the MediaWiki software. I am located here: Holistic Operational Readiness Security Evaluation (HORSE) project Wiki: http://www.lazarusalliance.com/horsewiki/ --
Best regards,
Michael

FYI: I found a mitigation plan for dealing with Apache Server hangs -- stop Windows from reporting the crash through a popup dialog that *requires* user intervention.
My Computer --> Properties --> Advanced --> Error Reporting:
- Disable Error Reporting
- Uncheck "But notify me when critical errors occur"
Using this configuration, the Apache Server restarts unattended.
Until somebody fixes this bug.
Hope this helps somebody else, jld. PS: I still get tons of errors in my Apache Log, very random "pattern".

Which version of Apache & PHP should be used in order to have a stable Mediawiki 1.7.1 install on Windows XP?
I have looked at the installation procedure on Mediawiki.org but somehow I am still having Apache error code 20024 + crash because of an error in one of PHP5 module.
So, what are you folks using??
jld.

Hello all
I'd like to customise some of my Wiki pages, alas, I don't know how (am not much of a PHP expert)...
- I have this little error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function text() in C:\Server\htdocs\wiki\skins\MonoBook.php on line 61
How to solve this?
- How can I change the "Main_Page" to something else?
Additionally, I have a bilingual wiki so I need two names for the Main_Page both accessible
- How to change the 'Talk:Article' to something different (i.e. like
they did with the translations of Wikipedia) 4. I have written a SSI-footer and header, however, I can't get them into including them in my index.php (php require('foo.bar') function), how do I do this, or can't I? 5. Can I change 'index.php' to 'wiki.php' w/o any problems? (the reason being, i'd like my wiki to be placed in my main directory, where my index.php already exists) 6. I've never been fond on the WikiFormatting ([[internal link]], ''italic text'', '''bold text''', etc), so I prefer using HTML in my Wiki, though, HTML is disabled by default... How can I enable all possible HTML and disable the WikiFormatting (don't argue or ask why)...
I guess that was it for now... Thanks in advance

Hi,
I'm setting up a wiki which isn't allowed to be viewed by anyone but a select group of people (which I want to be able to select from registered people). I've already found a way to prevent anonymous people from reading or editing anything (redirect to login page). But I even want registered users not be able to read/edit anything unless they're allowed/validated by me. Is there a way to have registered people go trough an admin validation before they're completely registered ?
I also tried making a new usergroup with all the original user access and set user permissions on false. But this didn't quite work since it also didn't allow me to access anything.

Hi,
I'm preparing the LanguageHsb.php for Upper Sorbian and need a correctly working plural transformation in this file. I've already tested the solutions of other Slavic languages (Czech, Slovak, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Croatian), but their requirements are some others. Upper Sorbian has following requirements:
Numeral Form 1 Singular 2 Dual 3, 4 Nominative plural 0 and from 5 Genitive plural
From the Slavic languages I tested, only Slovenian has still a dual. The tested solutions I modified don't work, they use the default form only. A differentiation doesn't happen.
I hope you can help me.
Thanks in advance, Michael Wolf

How come? Aren't you the sysop of your wiki to whom those prohibitive settings should not apply?

Nope, I'm afraid you need to give up. Numerals of Slavic languages simply are not taken into account in software such as MediaWiki or phpBB. As far as I know, all Slavic languages follow this rule, that the word "books" is different in "2, 3, 4 books" and "5, 6, 7 etc. books".
MediaWiki, phpBB, etc., only allows you to set one form of the noun for "1 book", and another form for "2, 3, 4, 5, 6... books".
The result is that for all occurrences of "2, 3, 4 [some object]" in MediaWiki, a false plural form (that for 5, 6, 7...) is displayed.
It would be very simple to fix this: just add one more string into the language configuration file, for "2, 3, 4 objects".
Or, since you say Slovenian and Upper Sorbian even have extra forms of plural nouns for the numeral 2, we would need 2 extra lines in the language configuration files, in total 4 lines of code for numerals:
1 object 2 objects 3, 4 objects 5, 6, 7 ..... objects
But trying to persuade the developers to add those two minuscule lines of code might be a gargantuan task. ;-)

I have suggested this: add to LocalSettings.php (and add users by hand as WikiSysop)...
$wgWhitelistRead = array ( "Main Page", "Special:Userlogin", "Wikipedia:Help");
$wgEnableUserEmail = true;
$wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['createaccount'] = false; $wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['read'] = false; $wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['edit'] = false; $wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['search'] = false;
$wgGroupPermissions['user' ]['move'] = true; $wgGroupPermissions['user' ]['read'] = true; $wgGroupPermissions['user' ]['edit'] = true; $wgGroupPermissions['user' ]['upload'] = true; $wgGroupPermissions['user' ]['search'] = true;

Thank you, by following the instructions it was easy to set up interlanguage links.
There's a cosmetic problem with our default skin, though, which is Classic. All interlanguage links are flagged as "external". When you switch to the MonoBook skin, they are shown correctly as internal links.
In terms of code, MonoBook puts in, for example, <li class="interwiki-en">, while the Classic skin inserts <a class="external"> for all interlanguage links.
Our interwiki table only states $1 for iw_url and 1 for iw_local for all language prefixes. Still, all interlanguage links are flagged as "external" in the Classic skin.
Would there be any fix for this, or do users preferring the Classic skin have to live with this bug?
For an illustration of the problem, here is our Sandbox:
