Just a quick question. I read through the documentation on the upgrade and just wanted verbal email confirmation from the experts -- looks like upgrading from 1.6.x to 1.8.2 is okay. I can skip going from 1.6.x to 1.7.x and then to 1.8.2. Right?

I'm no expert so this is purely anecdotal, but I upgraded http://wikigogy.org from MediaWiki 1.6.7 to 1.8.2 four days ago along with moving the site from a FreeBSD server to a Dreamhost.com virtual hosting account Debian Linux server with no problems that I am aware of. Note that 1.8.2 requires PHP 5 (5.1 reccommented).
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading says: "This guide should help users of the 1.7 release branch migrate to MediaWiki 1.8 in a smooth fashion. It will also work for users of the obsolete 1.6 branch."
