I tried cloning the MonoBook skin, copying the MonoBook.php, MonoBook.deps.php, and monobook directory to Test.php, Test.deps.php and test directory respectively.
Test appears in the user preferences but I am not getting the MonoBook look.

Did you change the references to monobook inside the *.php files as well ? (names of variables, classes, ...)

I've put an icon in the footer that's larger than the standard 88x31px, but unfortunately the footer does not resize to fit, thus the image overlaps the bottom footer line. I've tried meddling about in the Monobook.php file ("footer" section) but I've been unable to make it work right. I was adding in HTML line breaks, but this is far too cumbersome, and I don't know enough PHP.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
