Why is this a problem? If editors are working on different sections, they _shouldn't_ conflict too much.

They do! During this very last week, they have been complaining about save doesn't work. We frequently have several users copy-editing, adding, removing text, tables or figures to an article/report that must be shortly delivered.
We will find useful some kind of warning as "be careful, another user is editing this section!" or "this section is blocked for edition by user xxxxxxxxx".
Anybody else having this problem? Any workaround other than a chat system to avoid conflicts? Could this be a feature request? Thanks!
Cheers,
Ricardo

I thought there was such a warning on Wikipedia - but I might be wrong!?

Well, I'd been thinking of a page-specific shoutbox, which might also contain a automated log, sort of like 2007-03-22 09:50 editing started by anonymous 2007-03-22 09:55 editing completed by anonymous But I'm not enough of a programmer to code something like that...

Make sure you have diff3 installed and correctly set up. $wgDiff3 should be set to the path to the binary. This is necessary for MediaWiki to merge changes between conflicting edits.
