After some problems installing media wiki 1.4.x + mysql 4.0 under Fedora Core 3, finally I managed it, using only RPM binaries in this way:

1. I installed MySQL-server and MySQL-client-4.0.24-0 from http://dev.mysql.com

2. I installed MySQL-shared-3.23.58-1 from http://dev.mysql.com + php-mysql from FC3. MySQL-shared-3.23 provides the /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.10, required for php-mysql-4.3.9-3.

And so far, it works! That php-mysql was compiled for the FC3 people to work with mysql-3.23 but it seems it also works well with mysql 4.0.
