I recently came across Vic's extension package [1] which allows visualisation by using the graphviz/dot package.
Would like to ask, whether this can be enabled on all wikis. I can only support this. Tom

May I add that I have made some improvements to Vic's package that allow 1) other layout engines, and 2) text flowing right or left: http://www.Bytesmiths.com/InfoArk/Graphviz.php.gz
with examples at: http://www.IslandSeeds.org/wiki/Test:Graphviz (Scroll to the bottom to see examples of my hacks.) http://www.IslandSeeds.org/wiki/Components http://www.IslandSeeds.org/wiki/Biofuel
I heartily agree that Graphviz is every bit as wonderful as EasyTimeline, which *is* included in the distribution. Graphviz in the FIRST extension I install on any new wiki I set up!

Proposal for 1.5: include Graphviz using the new parameterized extension mechanism:
<graphviz layout="ENGINE" float="SIDE">...</graphviz> (both params optional, default behavior is same as present behavior)
where the non-terminals: ENGINE ::= [ 'circo' | 'dot' | 'fdp' | 'neato' | 'twopi' ] (default is 'dot') SIDE ::= [ 'left' | 'none' | 'right' ] (default is 'none')
(Please forgive my rusty BNF. Hopefully, you get the idea.)
I volunteer to make these changes when the first 1.5 beta comes out. (I'm not sure I have the time to deal with unstable CVS HEAD versions.)
Furthermore, I'd like to see the "float" parameter -- or something similar -- become a standard for any extension that produces graphics, including EasyTimeline and a raw Ploticus extension I'm working on.

No extensions are included in the MediaWiki distribution; that's why they're *extensions*. :) If there ever were, this was an accident.
Once we get some additional preference hooks set up I'll even be moving texvc out into extensions...

Couldn't extensions that are present in WikiPedia be distributed with the rest of the release? You could force the users to explicitly include them by editing LocalSettings.php to enable them, if you don't want to be responsible for supporting them.
Perhaps what Tom and I are asking is that Graphviz be installed on WikiPedia, as EasyTimeline is. That should bring it to a wider audience, and present fewer hassles to people who are trying to get it installed elsewhere. ("Well, hey: if it's good enough for WikiPedia, it's good enough for me!" :-)

... where it is more accessible to those who want to build complicated extensions...!
