We have just downloaded and installed the Wiki. I have to say you guys have done a brilliant job. Not only in the SW but in the installation process. Quite often that is where sw falls down.
I am sure that I read somewhere there is a way to have the documentation all localized. I have searched but can not find the info now.
Could someone please point me to the right location.
Thanks so much

Are you referring to instructions for users on using MediaWiki (not code documentation)?
There are pages you can import yourself; see http://mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Copying for instructions.

Thank you very much. That is exactly what I was looking for. I knew I had seen the import/export bits and just could not find them again. This is a very expansive system, so much to learn and remember.
Thanks again

Gary,
Hope this isn't a bother but
On the help page you referenced was this line
"For the images this only copies the image descriptions. You need also to upload them on your wiki. Although not complete, at least this gets you started on a decent help system."
I have 'saved' off an image from that mediaWiki page to the images directory (made sense to me :)
On the mediaWiki page for Help:Navigation it shows the following lik for the 'Tools' image next to "Tip for wiki.." in Navigation section.
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Image:Tools_clipart.png
On our local page it says
http://localhost/wikiSanMar/index.php/&Title=Special:Upload&wpDestFi... ools_clipart.png
I would have thought that the page source would have been the same. And that both of them would have defaulted to the IMAGES directory in the mediaWiki directory tree.
Have I just missed some setup item or do I have to edit source to reference the images directory?
Thanks

Don't save it directly to the images directory, upload it using that URL. I'm not sure why the actual file isn't exported, but it does the same on all installations I've tried, so it's nothing you've done wrong.

After much head scratching I realized what you were saying. I allowed for UPLOADS in the LocalSettings page. Then clicked the link, and sucked the downloaded image in.
It is odd that they don't come across. It would see that if the images were defaulted to the images directory then simply putting them in there would work.
But greater minds than mine <G>
Thanks again

The db needs to know about them too. You can use importImages.php to import them from the local filesystem.
http://mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Copying for instructions.
Running 1.9.3
Logged in as sysop.
I generated the xml file and saved it to desktop with IE7 and also Firefox 2. When attempting to upload through Special:Import to my wiki I get:
"Couldn't open import file
Please export the file from the source wiki using the Special:Export utility, save it to your disk and upload it here."
I tried a random page from Wikipedia but could not import it either. I could upload the xml file through the regular upload file page.
Did not find this error in the list archive.
Thoughts?
