I do not like the bold letter "N" in my Recent Changes page; newcomers to a wiki do not know the meaning immediately.
I simply replaced on the MediaWiki:newpageletter by a small image
old: N new: <img src=/stylesheets/images/new.png> (copy the small image into the subdirectory or somewhere else and adapt the img src link)

Please can we not do this? I like the way MediaWiki is relatively bandwidth-conservative. This is just totally unnecessary overkill. Newcomers to a wiki do not know the meaning of pretty much *anything* -- and whether you use a capital N or a little image doesn't make any difference in this regard.
