I'm getting a shared package and wanting to install MediaWiki there. It's Linux hosting and has all the prerequisites. My question is this: what is it I am supported to download, and install? I think I'm supposed to download the tar.gz file, but then what? Do I upload it (via FTP) to my webspace, and if so, will it unpack itself or what? I run Windows XP on my desktop. For the record, I haven't purchased the package yet, so I can't try things out yet, just want advice.
Thanks
Does anyone have a script (php or perl) to create a Wiki user without using the web interface, sending as parameters username, password, and email?
I have a complex site that already has much functionality in Perl, including a different and well-entrenched system of storing usernames and passwords (passwords are stored with crypt() in Postgresql); and I'd like to have the users be able to create Wiki accounts for themselves by re-entering their passwords and pressing a button.
However, we can't open up the normal Wiki account creation mechanism due to the extremely high chance of vandalism. It has to happen behind the scenes and be accessible only to people who have already logged in using our other system.
Thanks

You need to download the latest version of MediaWiki from sourceforge, the .tar.gz file as you thought.
MediaWiki needs to be unpacked to run on a server, this can be done manually in Windows XP using an unpacking program such as WikiRAR or WinZip or (I think) done via UNIX on some servers. Once you have unpacked it (or before if you are using the second method) you need to create a MySQL database using your web hosting package and then go to the wiki directory where it will prompt you to install MediaWiki.

So once I've "unpacked" the tar.gz, I upload the unpacked files and folders to my webspace? And then use phpMyAdmin I guess!

You're saying good-bye in the same spirit as you once said hello -- that is, in complete disregard of netiquette. ;-) Don't worry, though, you're anything but alone here in this regard. ;-)
Anyway, the unsubscription link is included in the headers of all messages from this (or any other) mailing list, including your message(s):

Well to be honest, I haven't found the list useful what so ever. So I'm unsubscribing as it easier this way than to have 50 emails flood my letter bow each day.

You could setup a rule, have them filtered to a folder only for MediaWiki e-mails, versus bailing out on the list. Just a thought.

I don't think you are meant to use phpMyAdmin at all unless you want to manually edit the MySQL database, usually web hosts provide a control panel where it lets you do many things with your hosting. There is probably something which says "Manage MySQL Databases" or similar, in their is the place you need to create the MySQL database.

Right! I couldn't install 1.8.2 because (after downloading and FTP'ing it!) I discovered my host didn't have PHP 5! Changed to 1.6.8 as suggested on #mediawiki.
I even installed InputBox myself! :P
Thanks for the help!
