Is there a way to add a spell-checker to the wiki (version 1.5.3)?
Personally, I think that's the responsibility of the client.
One great thing about putting it into the client would be that it could use a collaboratively maintained dictionary.
Damn, I mean the server, of course. How well does the OS X software work with mediawiki markup?
I'm not sure what you mean. It's Unix. "It Just Works"(TM).
I do see the value of a collaboratively maintained dictionary. But I'm spoiled by "as you tpye^H^H^Hype" automatic spelling correction, and the thought of going back to batch spelling correction makes me think about flint knives and stone axes.

I think what was meant was does it barf every time you type <nowiki>, or [[word|another word]], or some of the other odd strings of letters and punctuation that make up wikitext?
(The server-side spellchecker on LiveJournal is incredibly irritating in this respect, because for instance the "href" in "<a href..." is flagged as a misspelling every time, thus defeating the preview part of "check spelling and preview"; I don't entirely blame the coders, but it is very annoying)

I see you guys are talking about my extension. Sorry I have been busy as of late. How can I help?

To answer some of the questions, now that I read the full thread.
My code was designed without Mediawiki as its only use. So thanks to Aron for making it friendly to mediawiki users.
As for the question of <nowiki> <a href etc. I do handle that. This was meant to be an html spell checker so I exclude any html tags etc ( or thats the intent) before I do the spell check.

Sounds like it's time to start applying AJAX to the problem.
Hey Jan, maybe there are a few old Smalltalkers who could reimpliment all of this stuff in Ruby! <G>

Well the Chris McIntosh spell checker is SJAX because there is no obvious reason to be asynchronous in this case. You can't do much until the spell check data is back.
