I use a similar extension, but it does not allow me to re-write the displayed link text.
For example, I would love it if I could write:
<file text="Link Description">\server\filename.ext</file>
and it would render equivalent to:
<a href="file:///\\server\filename.ext">My Description</a>
Does your extension work this way? Does anyone know of an extention of this type that works that way?
cheers. - Rich (revansx)

I use a mediawiki extension called Link and I can link to shared folders and files with spaces in the names, for example:
<link>\\server\share\this file.doc</link>
Where we could find it ?

Hi Rich, Hi Mike,
have a look at http://assela.pathirana.net/File_Link_Extension
With this extension you can have a totally different link-text and link-target. I use this mainly to "translate" the link-target (with / instead of \ and %20 instead of blanks) to windows-like paths, so even if one of my colleagues can't or won't open the file via firefox-LocalLink she will be able to find the file via the windows-explorer.
You'll also be needing the LocalLink-Extension https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/281 if you want to open the file-links from Firefox.
