The Ubuntu wiki (MoinMoin) had problems when it hit about 32,000 pages - the maximum number of directories you can have in an ext2/ext3 directory.
(Moin doesn't use a database, so you have to cope with stuff like this.)

Yeah, working with filesystems gets ugly when you have a lot of entries in a single place... at least the common ones really aren't optimized for giant directories.
That's the sort of reason we have uploaded media files split up into subdirectories... much-hated, but it beats having the filesystem explode with 2.6 million files in one directory!
