I noticed the other day that wiki commons used index.php when you edit pages and then didn't use it when you were browsing the site.
How do you set up wikimedia to use index.php only when you are editing pages?
I know you can remove the extension from the local settings file but how do you tell it to use the extension when you are editing pages, is there something in defaultsettings file?
Thanks
Arthur Guy

Note usage of $wgScript and $wgArticlePath.

That recipe seems to have it's problem, it results in horribly bad performance and log entries like this:

I guess I don't understand why the browser keeps stubornly requesting the same URLs 20 times. Any hints?

Make sure your rewrite rules aren't faking the *script* URL.
On action=raw requests the script isn't getting the canonical URL it's expecting, so for security reasons is redirecting you to the canonical URL.

HTTP 302 Found
It's redirecting to itself. For whatever reason, when style sheets are requested, if you're using non-standard rewrites (in my case, /wiki/$Page?$args), it will redirect, even if it's to itself!
